tall speaker-what effect on simple recording

Postby joe3rp » Thu Aug 12, 2004 9:52 am

Sir Jadis,

I am sure the mega systems would sound great on large orchestral recodings and big band type.

How do they sound on simple solo performers...James Taylor, Ella, Jacinta...

Do they throw a "realistic" image of single signer w single guitar...?

joe3rp,

In most big systems, I feel they do. That would be the easy part. Solo singers with
single guitar or bass or piano sounds very realistic and intimate too, imo.

another big system that has impressed me in the years before is the Magnepan Tympani 4
which I heard in Excel Hifi HK. Small groups playing is handled with so much ease and naturalness, and large bands are just as good. I guess this is the essense of having a big
speaker system, to handle the soft, and the 'hard'. Otherwise, we will all be happy with
the 15 ohm Rogers LS3/5a. :)

and just to share an input from a fellow audiophile. normally, it is the
bass area where a small room will pay its price. so a volume control
level for the subwoofers will come in handy.

jadis...

having heard those megabuck systems, have you heard or had an experience listening to a smaller system in a small properly treated room which would compare to the large systems ?

I think I may have to say that a small system (probably the mini-
monitor type or even a small 3 way type) cannot really compare
to BIG systems ( 4 pc affairs with bass towers ). Perhaps the idea
of setting up a big system is to have it play anything that you can
throw at it. A small system simply cannot do that. As they say, it's
the law of physics. But, having said that, I have been impressed with
many a small system which can hold it's own except in recreating
a full range high level type of sound. I think the operative word here
is 'satisfaction'. The way a small system can satisfy any listener as
much as a big system would, in its 'small' way.

A few set-ups come to my mind. There was a Spica TC50 based
system that sounded really 'huge', in terms of soundspace and image.
That astounded me when I first heard it. Also, another was Rogers
LS3/5 based, with Quicksiver electronics. Very warm and very
eerie in realism. Very satisfying. Others would be the Celestion 600s
(which I once owned), and the Rogers LS7s. These can sound very
open, with wide and deep soundstage, perhaps mimicking some
bigger systems in those respects.

qguy,

I remember a very slight toe in. Mang Dima used to do 45 degree toe in. But his was
a very wide room. Mine was like 12' wide in the old room, so little toe in for better soundstage width.

thanks...my room is 9 feet wide...I used to point the celestion directly at me..but the soundstage was very small, however female vocals was perfectly dead center. I read a review of the older Sl6i where the reviewer mentioned that the Celestion sounded better w/o toe in ..(i guess depending on the room size)..I tried the same and got a better soundstage..will try a little toe in I guess by next week...

and I forgot to mention one of the sweetest sounding mini monitors of all, the sonus
electa amator. boy, driven by a krell ksa250 once with a jadis pre, it sounded fabulous,
and the low end actually was a rock and sock type, mimicking an 8inch woofer. i almost
can imagine that with the sonus line, one cannot seem to go wrong.

Thank you sir. :) Anyway, my listening room is 3.7m wall x 3.2 depth wall pa rin but open on both sides and the audio physics set-up is very effective for me :) I noticed one saturday when i kinda change the position of the speakers facing all straight it sounded like it's reverving or somewhat echoing. :( Is it the more likely effect given the room size? :)

Mike,

I believe that is very possible as perhaps the effect of the
speakers becoming more parallel to the back walls or side walls
could cause the reverberation. Experimentation and patience to
find the proper symmetry between toe in and its pros and cons
will be the only alternative. There will be no perfect position for
your speakers to ALL of software materials, and a little compromise
may be needed.
