THE ONE-TON EGGLESTON loudspeaker-PART 4 S.Systems

Postby jadis » Mon Aug 02, 2004 10:51 am

And here they are, the 1 ton loudspeakers( a PIECE!!!) that even Shaquille
O'Neil cannot haul by himself. I understand a crane was used to bring
it up to the second floor of the owner. Ooops, di pala, a freight elevator
pala. He used to mate these with ML monos, but now has shifted
to the Halcro monos. CD Transports and DAC by ML, the latest models,
and cables by MIT ( the HEAVIEST models, yung may bakal na box ).
Pre-amp by Halcro too. And the video system has its own steel cabinet,
powered on and off (in chronological order ) by a big mini-laptop type
remote control; projector by Barco. Needless to say, it has a 7.1 speaker
system for the latest DTS-ES or what have you. REAR speakers are by
DUNLEAVY ( something I probably would use for my front ) and the center
channel is also an Eggleston that cost 3x more than my Maggies.
Room size is a humongous 18ft x 32 ft with a 12 ft ceiling. I think the only
thing lacking is a folding sofa-bed so one can just sleep there.

Wowowow! :o

Curious jadis, there's somewhat a trend I notice among the ultra high-end setups. Humongous amps, boa-thick cables and skyscraping speakers but just a flagship CDP as a source (and by and large MLs). Except for Mr. Atienza's setup, most if not all of them doesn't comprise an analog rig, not to mention no sight of SACDPs even. Could you give us a bit of insight on their reason behind this? Thanks.

iceman90a,

those 4 wooden musicians, when placed in key positions of the room, make
a bright room sound dull and a dull room sound bright. don't believe me? don't.
it's just a joke. but kidding aside, they were giveaways by one of our guys whose
business was making handicrafts, so he handcrafted these and gifted each of us
with these. ( mind you, he did NOT personally handcraft them ). I think one doll is
earl hines, the other was duke, another was john klemmer, and the last probably
was ella.

Racio,

That is the BEST observation of the month!

Let me see, most of these people actually told me that they do not have the patience anymore for the finicky setup and ceremony just to
spin a record. But mind you , most of them HAVE HAD a JAPANESE
turntable and actually played it in their lifetimes. Some actually
told me they are 'lazy' (and that word, I think, is actually taken in
a positive term-like to say, tinatamad na ako magtayo at ilagay
yung plaka eh, tapos tatayo nanaman ako para iskip yung cut 2
tapos ilagay ko pa sa cut 4---huwag na po! ). As we can see from
the gear, these people can't be THAT lazy bec they somehow worked
hard enough to garner such modest cash to pay JR and AV Driver.
BUT, another reason, really, is that most of them are now in the ehem,
'late' years, ie, 55 onwards, so they have developed the 'reading glass'
syndrome, they can't see the cartridge or cut groove THAT near. This,
is a secondary obstacle.

Third, they manifest that there are no LPs to buy in SM,
Rustan, Glorietta, Shangrila unlike CDs, so easy to buy. And when they
commission a runner to buy LPs in HK, they have to gift the runner
with anti-hernia pills to boot, unlike CD, the runner can just hand-carry
them ba. In a few more days I might be able to post yet another
gargantuan system owned by an 85 year old audiophile who told us
that he listens to his system at least FOUR (4) hours a day everyday.
Do not ask me if he has a turntable. But there is one with an analogue
setup-Rockport Capella. His area is too infested with traffic I am the
one LAZY to go. But who knows...

In short, it's age and convenience. Maybe we of the lesser
age ought to rejoice now till Parkinson's or Alzeimer's strike. Can you
imagine your fingers shivering while you lower your $12,000 cartridge?
Better insure it first with Sunlife. Stay tuned for the next few giant
systems....coming soon....

PS: as to why no SACD player....I guess it's too cheap.

really, they wouldn't want to invest in double software anymore. poor guys.

Well, at least that leaves us "pauper-philes" something to gloat about! hehe.

Ironic that for the mere price of a pair of those anaconda-thick speaker cables they could already buy out the whole lot of our humble setups here. Yet, having double, triple copies of the same title of our favorite artists in both vinyl and CDs (SACDs even) seems to be somewhat of the norm for most of us cash-strapped WS citizens.

Still, I can't deny that I often look forward to your super systems posts/threads. Until we get a chance to actually listen to them, we can find comfort in having a glimpse thru your photos. Please keep them coming jadis.

*** Ironic indeed. As they say, to each his own. But very good point, Racio.
