The BIG Super Systems Part 1

Postby jadis » Wed Jul 28, 2004 6:29 am

As promised, I will be posting pictures from BIG super systems.
We begin with the humongous Krell MRA-CAST based system.
Speakers are B&W 800s, source is the Krell CD player with built
in DAC, (internal pre-amp bypassed), JP200 4-chassis line stage.
XLO Signature speaker cables and Magnan interconnects.

A brief description of the sound. I was there last night so I believe
my memory is still fresh. The pre-amp was fitted with Telefunken
ECC83s and ECC82 just three weeks ago, and the owner described
the change from the supplied Chinese tubes as a giant leap. He was
about to sell the MRAs and the front end before the tubes came in, but now is so happy he is not even thinking of selling anything.

The sound shows the effortless power of the MRAs, now pumping
2000 watts into the 4 ohm 800s, and imo, the most effortless amp
I have heard so far in a long long time; nothing comes to mind, save
maybe the Jadis JA800 but I think it is not even close in projecting
a sense of full range dynamism in terms of reproduced music. Vocals
are warm, perhaps the warmest, (the honor in solid-state warmth I
also give to the Jeff Rowland big amps) of solid-states I have heard.
Having lived with the 800s myself for four years but driven by tubes,
I realize the potential of these mini-beasts is really realized only with
a hefty amp like the MRAs in order to bring out its full potential in
creating a life-like soundfield, and in driving home to full satisfaction
the orchestral recordings that have huge transients; as they call it
in the audio press, the pfffff, to the ffffffft, or whatever. Cresendos
are brought to a state of nothingness by the sheer effortlessness of the
amps...and acoustic bass drums are rendered with great tightness
and control....for an amp costing $100,000 plus in the retail market,
what else can I say?

jadis and slayer,

thanks for sharing the pics of those super systems. have only heard those big systems at the audio shows in the USA. i first heard the 800s at a stereophile show driven by either Krell or the ML's. they were voted one of the top 10 systems at the show. the other one i remember well was the room of Dynaudio with equally big speakers. awesome...really awesome!

Extremes!

Ultra High-End!

Systems like these makes you "itch" and dump your current systems and enter the next

level.

When you purchased systems like these , I believe they include divorce

papers too! :D

Katakut-takot na mura sa Boss/Wife baka bugbog pa! :lol2:

vintage_dog,

My pleasure. Hope our readers enjoy them. Super systems are indeed a dream.
When one's net worth is 100m, what is 10m for stereo? hehe

Thanks to my friends too for agreeing to my requests to post their super systems
here. More to come.

jo2,

I think the trick is NOT to marry and buy first these skyscrapers. By that time, you feel
so high you would not even think of marrying anyone. :)

Mr. Jadis,

I noticed the room accoustics of the two system differ greatly.

krell - B&W

A lot of diffussor in the speaker end...or are they also absorber (abfussor)? Are those columns as bass traps? Ceiling treatment?

halcro - Dyn

It seem like covered absorbers in the speaker end.

How do you compare the room sound... to each other and your room...

TY

Fantastic! What an imposing sight it is! How does one get invited here?

Reminds me of an article in "Hifi Choice" by Paul Messenger. He stacked a number of small bookshelf speakers close to the ceiling to get that eerie "feeling" of scale and height of such recordings. Not just depth and width, but height that ordinary mortals won't yield or do.

VD you can try stacking two pairs of LS 3/5As and see if it comes close. It's been recommended awhile back, and they liked what they heard. The second speaker should be inverted with the tweeter down.

I could only imagine in my mind's ear how these brutes sound, or no I can't!?

I'm out for lunch!

Jadis,

I see that those Krell amps are all with isolation platforms. Why is it so, any explanation on the positioning?

Thanks :)
