rs241 wrote:Jadis, Just listened to Sara K's Water Falls last night. It truly was an awesome recording as you have described it to be! I felt like I was listening to a Telarc CD - but perhaps smoother and with a lot more details. The dynamics was just incredible! considering my very modest analog setup (Technics 1210 w/ Denon 103 cartridge). I really like the Water Falls and that one song about her mother (can't recall). I really appreciate you sharing this with us. I always look forwared to reading your music writeups...keep it coming. Many thanks, rs241.

rs241,

Glad you liked it. In my books, I consider it the model
of what recorded LPs should be. It does modest systems' justice.
That is what I mean when I said I learned from audiophile recordings.
It makes your high end spendings so much worth it.

Mr. Jadis, What is your reference track or album in judging sibilance in a hifi system?

bruno,

hmmm.....I ususally use Sheffield's Amanda McBroom "Growing Up in Hollywood
Town". There is no sibilance in her voice her. If there is, it's you're system.

My recent LP acquisitions via swap meet:

1. Peter Paul and Mary ( Ten Years Together )

I just love Mary's voice singing my boyhood songs, Puff the Magic
Dragon, 500 miles, Lemon Tree.

2. Pat Boone - Moonglow

Heard this from a friend a few weeks ago from his SET system.
Trying out those vocalist who were popular before I was born.

3. Nat King Cole Story Vol. 1 & 2

Another singer before my time. I'm starting to get the hang of
them.

4. Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall

I think she is even farther back my time. Exciting singer.

5. Joni James - Ti Voglio Bene

Got this long ago but failed to mention it. Probably the only
Joni I would have, mainly because I like these kinds of Italian
Songs.

Got 2 more oldies a few days ago,

1. Julie London- Julie is Her Name

2. Doris Day- Love Her

*** All I can say is that the vocal recordings of these two are round and body-ful
but a bit monotonous and the recording is a bit compressed. The Julie cover is nice.

Ahhh... Cry me a river :D I like the way she sang it, malambing na may pagka-suplada ang dating. :) I think there was a pseudo-stereo of this song that came out in later recordings but the mono version is still the best.

Futher thoughts on recordings:

I just thought I ought to classify the obvious about records and the way they are recorded.

1. Audiophile recordings with good musical content and good recording technique.
An example of this would be Sheffield's 'Growing Up in Hollywood Town'- I
believe it even won a Grammy for its engineering, recording-wise.

2. Audiophile recordings with bad musical content, ie, bad performance and bad
tunes, but had good recording technique. An example of this is Cardas LP's
'Alive in Little Bridges'- I had played this to many people and they all say
the musical content is awful but the recording excellent. Since it has been
for sale for decades, they say I might have to PAY for someone to buy it. :)

3. Ordinary recordings (the $10 type or lower) that has great musical content
and great recording technique. My example would be Scepter's Dionne Warwick's
'I'll Never Fall in Love Again'. No compression or distortion at high volume levels,
which a lot or ordinary pressings tend to excel in. And, I just recall, 'Beverley
Craven' fits in this category.

4. Ordinary recordings that has great musical content but has bad recording. These
are the types wherein we buy our favorite artists on commercial labels then we
hear a lot of vinyl crackle, compression, and even distortion. Obviously, this is
the most frustrating type for an audiophile. And there are too many to mention
here.

And perhaps, a very revealing stereo system will tend to highlight a bad recording's
flaw while a more 'forgiving' system (those with rolled-off high's and lows), might tend
to mask the same. In any case, most of us will want to live with good content and
good recording technique.

Rock's greatest

Postby noctilux » Tue Aug 10, 2004 2:42 pm

Since this is in the line of good music, sometimes music lovers ignore the audiophileness of the recording in place of the feel good outcome. The first thing that comes to mind is music I grew up with because of my big bro's radio and my teenage years:

Joni Mitchell/Court and Spark: Phantasmic record and recording, grab the half speed if you can.
Blood, Sweat and Tears/Blood, Sweat and Tears: Great horns, A+++ vocals, five stars for sound. Grammy album of the year. If your turntable is tuned right, you will notice more low frequency details in "You Make Me So Very Happy" Also available in Half Speed mastered version but the original press is very good and cheaper too.
Cat Stevens/Tea For The Tillerman: Still puts tears in my eyes whenever I play "Father and Son"
James Taylor/JT: first record I played that was mine and not my bro's
Steely Dan/Katy Lied: true excellence in engineering from recording to pressing. Great sidemen: Brecker Bros, Phil Woods, Michael McDonald, Larry Carlton, Jeff Porcaro, David Paich, Dean Parks
Steely Dan/Aja: What can I say, but same as above but with Steve Gadd, Mike McDonald, Tom Scott, Wayne Shorter, Lee Ritenour, Engineered by Roger Nichols and Bill Schnee (of Sheffield Labs)
Steely Dan/Gaucho: Grammy Award Winner for Engineering
Steely Dan: the rest of the albums, might as well get them since you already have 3.
The Police/Outlandos D'Amour: Groundbreaking album. Married Reggae with good ol' rock and roll! RAW!!!
The Police/Reggatta de Blanc: More refined version of the 1st album
The Clash/London Calling: The ultimate in 80's political cum rebelious rock. a must have if you grew up in the 80's. If you didn't, tough luck! but still don't let this slip off your hands. Rolling Stone Mag voted this THE GREATEST RECORD of the 80's, when records were still 12" in diameter and not shiny silver pucks.
U2/WAR: Just like the police, they were nice and raw at this time and when Bono still didn't look too much like Robin Williams. How can I forget since our wannabe rock band played New Year's Day over and over and over ...
Tears For Fears/Songs From The Big Chair: One of the best uncomplicated yet melodious guitar ad-libs in the 80's in EVerybody Wants To Rule The World. Search Kazaa and you'll find at least 10 remixes of this 80's theme with Machiavellian overtones.

Jadis, thanks for the space.

This is an incredibly rich and warm sounding LP, vocals with back up
vocals blending first voice and second voice, one would want to hear it
again and again. I have had 4 copies but sold 2 upon proddings from
2 friends. The label is Columbia, CS9302 and is recorded as "360 Sound".
I figure that means a 360 degree panoramic soundstage width which
one can attest to when listening. The vocalists are pasted flush right
smack into the speaker plane itself, unlike modern recordings which
would place the singers behind the speakers. But this is not bothersome as it is inherently
imbued in this kind of a recording technique.Another LP I have is this type is the Columbia 'The
Barbra Streisand Album". And the hallmark of these two LPs is not really the soundstage
width but the fullness of the voices of the singers. Almost perfectly
full-bodied. And very smooth at that without harshness nor grit. The
best song here for most would be side 2 cut 1, "If I fell". At the middle
part, the second and third voices come in really in eerie fashion. Guitar
accompaniment here is also rich and thick, with euphonic qualities.
And if one if a Brothers Four fan, they have multitudes of LPs, it's just
a bit harder to find clean copies, they also sing favorites like, 500 miles,
Puff the Magic Dragon, Jamaica Farewell, Try to Remember, etc in other
albums. And the best would be to get their double album 'best' series.
A truly remarkable group of singers.

i know this is a very difficult question to answer , but here goes :

what is the price range ( minimum to maximum ) of the LPs you have listed at the start of this thread ?
need to know so i wont pass on the chance of grabbing a good audiophile LP when I see it.

thanks in advance
