...and now for something different...

I had this on CD for a long time and last year I was able to find this on LP in HK. The singer is a Taiwanese songstress, very popular in Taiwan and Hongkong - Tsai Chin. She is something like of Julie London in the Chinese music world, and she sings folk, ballad, pop, and jazz tunes. The songs here are in Mandarin, all folk songs, 'oldies', as it is called in the western world. Her singing is very simple, yet very melodramatic, full of expression and feeling. For those who like Mandarin songs, this is a beautiful album. Lush, rich in body, and very melodious.

Below is another album of hers, in CD only, but this is recorded using the K2 mastering technique - the result is a very musical and smooth recording, and it is recorded in Taiwan, songs in Mandarin also.

Still Harry After All These Years - Harry James & His Big Band

Superb demo LP and enjoyable music like Caravan, Satin Doll, Moonglow,
Take the 'A' Train....Fans of big band are in for a wonderful treat with this big band album. Excellent sonics as one would expect from D2D recording;
but in contrast to say, M&K's For Duke, the overall soundstage is deeper and more laid back while still retaining the rich harmonics of the various wind instruments. Drums are stupendous here; even my bass shy Maggies suddenly seem to wallop at the proper time. The dynamic cresendo is surprising here, literally. They seem to be not there, appearing soft at first, then swelling to super dynamic levels, without shrieking while maintaining the 'bite' of horn instruments.

Lincoln Mayorga and Distinguished Colleagues Vol. 3

The last of the 3 series of LP bearing the same title. And This may be the best for me, music selection-wise. McCartney's 'My Love' is beautifully played, and it ends with much fanfare as I have never heard. Another great tune is Stevie Wonder's 'You are the Sunshine of My Life', and oh, the Legrand Medley that ends with 'Summer of '42'. Really beautiful. Other nice cuts are songs from Porgy and Bess and West Side Story.
I still enjoy this album today as when I first heard it in the 80s, truly a great album, in my books.

Eydie Gorme and The Trios Los Panchos - AMOR

Image

A couple of a months ago, I heard this LP in a friend's house and I said to myself, I gotta get one for myself. I have never heard Eydie Gorme's album prior to this, and an added treat is the backup playing of The Trios Los Panchos, themselves quite a popular group among my older friends. For lovers of Spanish songs, this is a good one. Will remind you of those lunch and dinner buffets in Alba's where something like this is exactly playing while you eat. :) Songs include Amor, Piel Canela, Historia de Un Amor, Noche de Rondo (oooh, what a lovely tune), Sabor A Mi, etc. Recorded in Columbia 360 Stereo. I'm beginning to think that nothing bad comes out of these 360 stuffs. :)

Vanessa Williams - Save the Best for Last

Ever since I heard this song live, not by Vanessa, but by Melissa Gibbs, sister of Janno Gibbs, in a small pub in Malate in the 90s, I fell in love with this song. It was even nominated for song of the year in the Grammys, so I went out to seek for this in LP, but only got a 45 single, pressed in US.
The manufacture quality of this 45 impressed me. The label printing has the letters embossed on the paper, shiny and all, and the matrix stampers are even engraved, one can feel the letters with the fingers. Wow. And the sound quality is a double WOW. On the initial note of the keyboard alone, I can tell this is a fantastically recorded 45. There is a sense of overall clarity without shrillness or edge, basically distortion free unlike my "Hello" single, and the low end is actually quite staggering with bass almost filling up the entire room. And the bonus is, I actually love the song. :)

Jadis,

Ahhh, Volume III... It was only when I switched turntables that I began to appreciate Lincoln's work. When I first heard it only my old TT, this LP sounded dry and uninvolving, walang dating. After taking Pican's advise to switch to an audiophile grade TT, I pulled out this LP from the inactive batch and played it again. This time, what was dead to me before suddenly became alive. I kept telling myself, "ganon palang tumunog 'yon"... Luckily, I never thought of selling this, else, I would have regretted it.

IMHO, I think this LP will reveal a particular analog gear's shortcomings.

Cheers

hmmn, interesting. i have always liked the Volume III regardless of my turntable (Oracle, JVC, Clearaudio) and Cartridge. it could be the music for me.

Eydie Gorme's Amor, I have that from my Tita. Malinis nga mamya

Hi Jadis,
Mabanggit nga ke misis :D
BTW, a couple of years back when I bought a new pair of Tannoy M2.5s and disguised it as M1s - I was playing that particular song when my wife joined listening, my wife commented 'bakit iba tunog?' :o :o :o first before realizing my "M1s" got "bigger" then noticed that they're new  and we had a good laugh :D - pero pambihira talaga pandinig nila :P

yes. sometimes wives can be very good 'neutral' listeners too, dogears. i have an audiophile friend who puts his wife before him in judging audio gears. hindi na kailangan mag camouflage pati, transparent pa ang checkbook.

btw, i am trying to convince a friend to allow me to take pics of his nice and unique record collection and post it here, as i myself am boggled by such, which includes the 3 M&K super lps i posted before, and those, btw, are all sealed. aside from which, he has 3 opened, for him to play....3 sealed Concorde D2D LA4 Just Friends, 2 copies of the Decca La Fille Mal Gardee, wide band and narrow band, a sealed Casino Royale and another opened (s3), the fabulous Ancient Airs and Lute from Mercury, and 3 copies of Hi-Fi Espanola, original FR1/FR1 matix....and a few original Blue Notes (Lexington address)....and an original US pressing of Cascades Rythym of the Rain...and the Lincoln volume 1.....i hope they all fit in my camera.

Sir A,

True, I guess it could be the music. Nagbabago na siguro preference ko sa music

Jadis,

Aside from Eydie's Amor and More Amor, another good LP to watch out for is her Greatest hits. I got a CD version of this from CD-exchange a few years ago. Walang tapon. Well, aside from her spanish hits, also included in the LP are some of her Bossa Nova hits (blame it on the bossa nova).

Cheers.

Sir jadis, you may want to check Neil Diamond's Hot August Night in vinyl or cd. You can feel the air from the concert in this recording not to mention an awesome performance from Neil Diamond and the band is great as well.

If you get to listen to this album, you'll never listen to his studio albums again  One of the best live concerts out there :D Highly Recommended :D

Again, I bought my dad his own copy of the CD [2disc set] and I've got my own set :D It's that worthy :!: :)

hi dogears,

You are right on the dot!!! I have the Mobile Fidelity LP of this fabulous 2 album live concert. I was keeping it at bay for a future mini review. But you said it all, at least I don't have to repeat it. :) Of all the MoFi's I've owned, this is the ONLY one I kept, still in day 1 immaculate condition. Thanks for the contri, man. :)

....oops. Na feature ko na pala ito. Page 5. I suddenly remember na parang na post ka na to...so here it is again.

Neil Diamond - Hot August Nights, Live at the Greek Theatre, LA

This is one of the Mofis I truly like. Spectacular remastering by Stan
Ricker and pressed by JVC virgin vinyl (btw, one way of telling a VV is to
put the LP up against a ceiling light and you will see THRU the vinyl your
ceiling light bulb or flourescent), the performance of Neil Diamond here is
desribed by critics as 'electric', triumphant', 'moving', 'hypnotic', and 'outstanding'...enough said. I just sat back and felt the tremendous
experience of this LP.
