Question for Mr. Jadis

Postby m_shoe_maker » Tue Jul 06, 2004 1:45 pm

Hey Jadis, were you the one who was featured in the 2nd issue of "Audio Video Rumors" during the early 90s :?: I have both the 1st and 2nd issues of that local Hi-End Audio Magazine. :) Love your speakers man :!:

Although I don't have the copy of it (just read it), were you the one who wrote something in TAS during the early 90s too :?: It was titled like "Banana Republic" or something :?:

You D'Man :!: :)

Mr shoe maker,

Yes, I was the one featured, with the B&W speakers which I owned
for about 4 yrs. I also wrote an article in the first issue of that short-
lived mag. And yes, I my letter to HP got published and answered
in Issue 98 of TAS which I keep till today ( the only issue I retained
after selling 81 copies last week). And I also had a letter published
in Stereophile but I do not recall what issue it was. Thanks for the
interest, shoe.

And to go earlier that period, The first Philippine Audio Society was
formed in the early 90s and I was the secretary. And the PAS published
a journal where I was fortunate enough to be the second editor in chief.
It's great to see 900+ pinoy audiophiles around the net, really great.

Just a typo correction as I could not find the edit button in my reply
to mr shoe maker.

"I my letter to HP which got published...."

There should be no 'I' . :)

qguy,

The speakers featured in the mag was the B&W800. Before that,
I had the 801 SeriesIII, which I now feel gave me more listening
pleasure than the 800s, bec the 800s were more analytical and too
revealing of system flaws.

And btw, the title given by HP re my letter was, "Bananas From
the Republic". The guy has been know to be a bit smug in character, but
which New Yorker isn't? The saving grace is that he answered the
questions properly.

Aha :!: So that's you. :)

Are you still using those 4 chassis Jadis JA200s :?: :o

Anyway, what ever happened to Audio Video Rumors :?: How many issues were printed :?: I only have 2 issues. :(

I remember the 1st issue. There was coverage of Dave Wilson when he visited the Philippines, and gave a lecture at the The Listening Room. :o All the Big Boys of Philippine Audio were there. :o Even ihatejazz had a small picture there. Naks naman. SIKAT :!:

I miss that magazine. :( Even though some audiophiles felt it was too biased in favor of JR's products.

May I ask question for Mr. Jadis. :)

Why use Jadis as handle? I assume you're using Jadis amp, so, my real question is, what do you like about jadis?

Thanks to VD, WS is best thing thast happened to audio, high end audio, DIY, in the Philippines. Forming a club was a reason for those who already know each other to formally get together, then to recruit new members along the way. It was a difficult task as lone enthusiasts would have to familarize himself with a set of new found friends and try to fit in, which is not an easy task to be. Much like being the new student in a class in school. Not to mention that to find out you are the poorest kid in the class. Can you imagine getting inferiority complex?

The PAS was known to be the elite in as far as having the most expensive setups in this land. Maybe (I said maybe :) ) to their thinking they are but in reality there are a whole lot more audiophiles here who do not know PAS exists and own more superior equipment than most PAS members. They are a cluster of enthusiasts that do not realize there is a world outside of their walls. Reminsicent of the movie, The Last Emperor. I was approached by one of their member when they visited a friend's setup for the first time only to find out this fella had the latest toys for big time boys. He told me in disbelief that "all the equipment of ** is over P500,000 each!" In fairness though, they are a bunch of nice people who enjoy congregating among themselves and discusss anything under the sun, though most of the topic were non-audio related. Their membership of last count has dwindled to a mere dozen or so. The PAS is predominantly made up members who are of chinese descent.

A recent foray into a"audio club" was the ACP. Patterned after the Audiophile club of Athens, I guess. The club was doomed from day 1. They required applicants to have a setup with a P300,000 value. 1 Peso below the stipulated is not qualified. The guys who started it dropped out of audio before they could even get the club it to midair.

I have to thank VD, Arnoldc, rtsyrtsy, corrsty, and last but not least MSM for making WS what it is today.

mr shoe maker,

No, I do not have the Jadis 200 mono's anymore. And it's
not bec I do not like the sound. About 2 yrs ago I sold it, or
traded it in for an ARC VS110. The trouble with the Jadis amp
is that every year or so, it pops up, breaks a diode, emits some
smoke, and creates cardiac problems for my heart, and drains
my wallet. Not a pretty sight. And to makes things really worse,
I couldn't find a reliable technician to fix it. And in the 3 times
that it broke down (within 7 yrs) most parts replaced were NOT
originals, and the sound got thinner and shrill. So I decided to
get rid of it. They are excellent amps, and I will address that more
in another post to answer the q of one of our friends here.

I have to correct myself, my article re the Musicality and
the Accuracy of Sound was in the 2nd issue, not the first. I
have both copies too. And I think, that there were only 2 issues
published as JR was telling me that the cost in producing one
issue was like 500t pesos at that time. And, yes, most of his
products were featured. But I would imagine his competitors
would not like to advertise in a rival's magazine. Just my
ten cents thought.

dinolara,

Yes, I had the JA200 monobloc by Jadis for about 7 yrs. And
still own the JPL line stage which I got back in 1990. The thing
I like about the Jadis line is what I call its musicality. Users
of vintage equipment like Marantz or modern stuff like Conrad
Johnson would say that too about them. For me, Jadis has refinement,
especially in the high frequencies, that I did not find in the other
electronics at that time. Very smooth mids and highs too, are its
trademarks. Conrads may be more 'euphonic' in the mids, but
Jadis is fine too in this area, leaner than CJ but lovely to the ears.

I tinker around with the tubes too. I never liked any of the
stock Ei tubes they supply, so even in the mid 90s I was a vintage
tube hunter. Started with Telefunkens, then settled down with
Mullards. Its a matter of taste. For me, I like experimenting with
tubes, it changes the taste and complexion of the sound. Simple
change, but noticeable improvements. With these Euro tube, I get
a real lush, and warm 'tube' sound. And this is what buying tube
gear is all about.

Ok. You know things ha...

You mentioned the Pinoys bolting out. True. Most of them. A
couple remained. Literally, a couple, husband and wife. I recall
the friction started when the officers agreed to charge a 100 pesos
a month membership fee to the members. This caused an uproar
in the membership and in the next meeting a debate ensued, not
unlike the congressional canvassing, where tempers flared and
feelings got hurt. The bone of contention of the side of the officers
is to have a maintaining fee for expenses like printing a journal
and hooking up to some other audio groups abroad...the other
side claims that to pay 100 it must entail some sort of benefit
for the members. Good thing there was no dagdag bawas then,
or hell would have broken loose. At any rate the was the last
meeting of the PAS and the Tuesday group was formed after that.

no problem, arnoldc.

I don't know what happened to the Tuesday group, but I heard
there became a Friday Group, though another cast of characters.

I had no problems with the Tuesday group people, in fact, they
even at one time invited me to their guest speaker but I think
it did not happen bec of logistics problems.

Yes, we learned from past lessons. There are good sides to a club,
friendship and camaraderie. But it sort of becomes politicized once
you put leaders. I was not in favor of putting presidents or VPs then,
but the majority wanted, so I just followed. There were really nice
times then, we even had Christmas parties with live operatic
singers and band players. The downside is politics. You cannot
satisfy everybody. Look at our country. Even Ping couldn't
give in to FPJ, so what else is new? ( I do not intend to start
a political thread here. ) And that's it.
