the Thorens master...

thanks to joel (setup2), both my TD124 and 160 super are in great shape making some serious music.

the td124 has been on the shelf for almost a year. the bearing needed replacement and the aluminum topplatter was damaged in transit. joel brough them home and had the bearing replaced, the tonearm sme 3009 installed and the cables fixed (they were wired for mono). acrylic platter s were made courtesy of mike and now, the rig is awesome...built like a tank and operating with swiss precision...

the td160 super had a noisy motor and was replaced as well. a clearaudio beta wood is installed and this seems to mate well with the thorens.

thanks a million to joel....these two classic tables are now reborn!

The main difference is the platter, Mark I has the cast iron while the Mark II has the aluminum platter... some say they made the change when some sectors said that the cast iron platter affects play as it attracts the magnet in cartridges... have encountered several Mark Is and it never happened with me... think the aluminum platters only have specific marks for the strobe, either 50 or 60 Hz. so you should check on this. The old platter had both marks for 50 or 60 Hz.

Outside, Mark I is creamed colored while Mark II is gray... the lever knob are different also...

Another thing about the Mark I, the early units, pre 1960, had some kind of plastic material as the main bearing in the spindle assembly... Thorens decided to change this to sintered bronze bearing when they found out that the plastic bearing reacted to the oil and expanded in time and caused the assembly to seize... so you if you obtained an early unit, it is best to change the bearings, upper and lower with the bronze type...

Regards,
Joel
