Do you think i can put acrylic platter mat on my TD 166MKII? (kasing ganda rin kaya yan ng TD 165 mo? tingin ko kasi sa TD 165 with acrylic mat, poging-pogi ang dating)
I'm not sure how different a TD 166 to a TD 166MKII is.
But my TD 166 practically looks like my TD 165.
My Goldmund Mat was a permanent stick-on thing. Parang may double adhesive tape under the entire mat.
I was planning to remove the Goldmund Mat, and keep it as a souvenir (Goldmund ata yun
), but coudn't.
It was stuck for good.
Sayang, that's the first and last time I will have a Goldmund product.
My acrylic mat was relatively thick - about 3mm thick.
Given this thickness, prospective Acrylic Mat users should see to it that their respective tonearms have VTA adjustments to compensate for the height.
If not, you can place washers between the armboard and the tonearm.
IMHO, acrylic mats are not for everyone.
In my experience, the typical "Old-School Thorens Sound" was lost when I placed this mat.
This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who you talk to.
Some people buy an Old-School Thorens for collectibility purposes (cute magkaroon ng lumang turntable), some buy it coz of the "Thorens Sound". If you really like this "Thorens Sound", don't use an acrylic mat. IMHO

Para sa akin, the fact that one bought a Thorens, means something.
If one wanted to have another type of sound, might as well purchase another brand.
Come to think of it, it would be a lot easier, not to mention cheaper if I just got another turntable brand, rather to put all those gizmos on my Thorens just to achieve the sound I wanted.
So why did MSM do this exercise
Wala lang.
Verdict:
Audible Difference
Yes, relatively big change
Which was Better
With or without the platter
As always, this I leave to you.............
