As backup I also have a replinthed TD-160Super and SME3009II Improved with Audio Technica F3 cartridge. Needs a minor mod on the bottom (new) panel though to accomodate a longer phono cable plug.

Oh, sayang naman, take care of the rubber parts that they don't warp in heat. The TD124 can be used in either 50 or 60Hz, just reverse the motor pulley. Search for a TD124 manual online, you'll see detailed instructions on how to do this. If you need tips on what lubes (for the 124) to use in the bearing and motor, just PM me.

i pick-up armboard for Rb300 for the 124 in one of the 2nd-hand shops here. 'you think RB is a good match for 124 compared with SME. on my next trip to manila, i'll PM you and maybe you can help me fix the 50hz conversion, and the rb300 arm.

I used to own a bone-stock TD166. :)

Prior to that, I used to own a Thorens TD165 loaded with a bunch of goodies such as a 8) Goldmund 8) Acrylic Platter Mat (mahal pa platter mat sa table  ) + a 8) Magnepan 8) Unipivot Tonearm. :)

This table tasted old-school Grado cartridges (ZTE series ata), Audio Technica OC9, Denon DL103 (standard), old-school Sumiko Talisman. :)

MSM,

Do you think i can put acrylic platter mat on my TD 166MKII? (kasing ganda rin kaya yan ng TD 165 mo? tingin ko kasi sa TD 165 with acrylic mat, poging-pogi ang dating)

I'm not sure how different a TD 166 to a TD 166MKII is. But my TD 166 practically looks like my TD 165. :) My Goldmund Mat was a permanent stick-on thing. Parang may double adhesive tape under the entire mat. I was planning to remove the Goldmund Mat, and keep it as a souvenir (Goldmund ata yun :o ), but coudn't. :x It was stuck for good. :( Sayang, that's the first and last time I will have a Goldmund product.

My acrylic mat was relatively thick - about 3mm thick. :P Given this thickness, prospective Acrylic Mat users should see to it that their respective tonearms have VTA adjustments to compensate for the height. If not, you can place washers between the armboard and the tonearm.

IMHO, acrylic mats are not for everyone. In my experience, the typical "Old-School Thorens Sound" was lost when I placed this mat. This may be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who you talk to. :D Some people buy an Old-School Thorens for collectibility purposes (cute magkaroon ng lumang turntable), some buy it coz of the "Thorens Sound". If you really like this "Thorens Sound", don't use an acrylic mat. IMHO  IMHO  IMHO

Para sa akin, the fact that one bought a Thorens, means something. If one wanted to have another type of sound, might as well purchase another brand.

Come to think of it, it would be a lot easier, not to mention cheaper if I just got another turntable brand, rather to put all those gizmos on my Thorens just to achieve the sound I wanted. So why did MSM do this exercise :?: Wala lang.

Verdict:

Audible Difference :?: Yes, relatively big change :o

Which was Better :?: With or without the platter :?: As always, this I leave to you.............

hmmm... i could have sworn i was already posted here :?: . anyway, i have:
td 166 mkII with stock arm
grado m1+ mm cart 1989 to 2004
presently using grado gold cart.

this has been with me since 1989 when i got it mint but i was 3rd owner (1st and 2nd owner wanted to focus on CDs). recently had ICs upgraded to XLOs c/o hypertriode. i still have original box and manual.

in the absence of strobe mat i clocked 100 revolutions in 181 secs. therefore it is still 99.4% speed accurate. not bad after 16 years. :)

I'm still keeping, though not using at the moment, a TD160 Super with
SME3009R arm and Fidelity Research MC cartridge. Am waiting for the
Cambridge phono box to arrive so I can put the 160 to active use again.
