Tonya, thank you for being such a great host! This setup is as great sounding as it is great looking! Congratulations! I am now determined to - go Schick, and to go Set! With matching rubber and aluminum plinth for one of the Greys in my arsenal. Cool, indeed! And it was a pleasure meeting Plasticman, Mr. SlateD himself - your system is next Pards, and of course the ubiquitous Ka Noly and Ka Ryan! Salud!

Tony- Too bad I had a speaking engagement last night at the same time. Missed this session. :( I'm sure it was a revelation for your guests, hearing your rubber/aluminum plinthed 301 w/ 12in Schick arm :!: 8)

Bro, it's also worthwhile to consider the SME 3012 Ser II tone arm....'coz I got a 401 Celebration Edition sometime ago...oh boy it sings with it.... cartridge was Ortofon VMS 30 MK II.... but of course Thomas Schick's Schick 12 tone arm is quite respectable but its mounting is not user friendly though....

Sir,

My apology for this so delayed response...401 is 401 nothing new Sir whatsoever...the reason I called mine Celebration Edition is that I got that 401 on Garrard's Anniversary Day which is November 11, correct me Sir if I am wrong, and if you can remember right that was year 1945 when the Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company Ltd. is founded... Anyway, I bought it from a German gentleman who happens to be the Manager of BMW in Melbourne, Australia and it was in perfectly well maintained condition...without hesitation I bought it right away and ask my good friend Sam who owns a Joinery Factory in Bayswater, Victoria, Australia and also a very skillful wood craftsman himself who loves and understand Hi-Fi like myself to build me a specially designed plinth to go with that 401...it cost me a couple of sleepless nights but it's worth it...I tell you Sir if 401 has the 301 motor i can tell you now that it is the only solution to make your 401 sings like a nightingale... that's why selling it was one of the biggest mistakes in my life...it's gone now but in the hands of someone who will care and cherish it for the rest of his life my very good friend a French gentleman who loves music and who now lives in Melbourne a composer, arranger and conductor in his own right... I hope I gave you a very good picture on my formerly owned Garrard 401 Anniversary Celebration Edition...Cheers...

For a while I thought you were referring to this-

This is the picture responsible for making me a 401 fan since I saw it 15 years ago.

Stereophile,

Yes, It is pretty cool though I've seen only one of these arms turn up for sale in the second hand market and that was more than 10 yrs ago and no luck yet. Looks are very subjective but I think it would also Blend with Tonya's nice plinth.

Cheers :)

:) I was really expecting that someone would come up with that SME Tone Arm in this thread..the reason I did not have it -
1) I heard it on my friend's VPI TT it did not hit me the way I expected it to be;
2) It's quite expensive that it is unjustifiable at that time (price wise) to go for it.

When I bought my 401 it was already loaded with SME 3012 SII so I just beefed it up with prudent upgrades that is affordable and practically effective....and the end-result was way over than what I had imagined it to be :D :D ...
