Garrard 301 GB + SME V + SME 312s

Postby stereophile » Thu Dec 27, 2007 5:41 pm

It took sometime and a lot of patience to build my Garrard 301 GB. I would like to thank Master Plinth-Builder joe3rp for another jaw-dropping piece of his craftsmanship, not just in wood, but metal machining. He patiently hand-crafted the beautiful brass armboards for the SME tonearms w/c enhance the beauty of his plinth. It is a very beautiful and functional piece of art deco. 8)

Sadly, for this project, I had to 'amputate' the SME V from my Michell Orbe  ...but that is another story...

Learning everyday here. Beautiful worksmanship!

Can you please describe the sound? I know all these dedication must, and can be attributed to your dedication of your craft to a cherished past. Your Dad, your grandfather, and old mentor in audio. The old familiar sound.

On an extra windfall, I will get one myself. :D

Thank you for your comments, guys. Honestly, I only set up the SME V late last night after I got the armboard from joey. I took my sweet time mounting it and giving it a trial run. The 312s was up and running a few days ago with an MM cart for test bed purposes. When I was satisfied with the 301's quiet and stable performance, I decided to swap it for a Denon DL-103. It is always nerve wracking transplanting a tonearm/cart combo from one ttable to another. This is when serious damage can occur. Fortunately, it went smoothly.

I have yet to sit down and listen with the same set of gears and LPs which I used when I was listening to the Orbe with the SME V/Skala combo. If my memory serves me well, I will be able to tell you in a few days what contribution a change of turntable has in my system with all over variables controlled.

Dante- Let me break-in the DL-103 and the tonearm cables of the 312s first before I invite you over. I will still have to make a few final adjustments as the cart's suspension settles in.

Dodo- Indeed, it's a 301 DREAM MACHINE :!: :D Hard to imagine mating a 50+ y/o ttable to modern tonearms/carts. Without even listening, it looks stunning- thanks to the wet-look finish of joey. Give me a few days to run it thru it's paces.
