Hi, I also have one the 125II with an SME3009 II improved. I suggest the following:
a. check the level / balance ( there are 3 springs ) you can adjust
b. clean the spindle hole and spindle bearing and put new oil. If there is a little play use more vicous oil.
c. dampen the inner and outer platter.
d. clean the contact of the interconnect and where it connects to the tonearm
e. check VTA and cartridge alignment. Suggest approx. 20 deg. tracking angle.
f. check VTF with a gauge.
g. check belt (you don't want it too tight and too loose) Too tight the spindle will rub too much on the spindle well causing noise.
h. clean the pulley and the side of the inner platter to rid it of belt residue.
Have fun with your 'new' table.
Cheers!

I did dampen my old TD166 before. :) I put a lot of Dynamat inside the plinth. :) The sound did become different. Wheteher it became better or worse, that a subjective matter. Nevertheless, it was fun experimenting. :D

MSM, I have a TD 160 super and would like to experiment. In your case and listening preference, did it improve the sound? One thing more.. and this may be a stupid question...what is a dynamat and where can i buy it?

if you still remember fritz, i got this 166 from you. this SM-tweaked was the most musical thorens turntable (regardless of model) i ever had. if you can do that damping job again, that would be your claim to fame (aside from your mostly inane posts) :D :D :D

Aftermarket gears for better torque. Damping fluid in rear swing arm. Lubrication of pivot.

Oops wrong 125!

rsm2a3 has a TD125 with SME-3012. Maybe he can share his experience. Try to PM him.

And that was just sporting a stock Thorens arm. :)

Di ko na ata magagawa yun. Ang hirap nun, at tamad na ko ngayon eh.

Pwede, the 166 is very similar to a 160 Super. :)

Dynamat is that black aspalto-like thingy often used by car audio freaks to dampen their "boom-boom" rides. :) You can buy 'em at car accessory shops. Dynamat is the brand. You can buy other brands which are similar.

I personally liked what happened to my Thorens after putting that Dynamat thing.

The poor man's Dynamat is Flashband roof flashing tape. Available in rolls at big mall hardware stores. It is bitumen based too. But bear in mind, that once in place, there is no turning back. Removal is messy. Perhaps not feasible in woodwork cause it involves using kerosene.

MSM, basing from your experience I think it is worthwhile experimenting myself. Thanks very much for the info. :)

Gino, thanks also for your input. :)
