My Listening Room

Postby jadis » Sun Jul 11, 2004 9:40 am

My main listening room since 1992. Only some gear has changed, Jadis
JA200 gone since 2002. B&W 800 Godzillas became Magnepan2.7 Chimps
(size-wise). The last pic is the blue gas amidst the orange glow of the
SED KT88s in my ARC VS110. I just love that sight. Plus newly taken
photo of Telefunken ECC82 with blue glows..a rare sight. And some
of my tube collection. Speaker cables are Symo of Switzerland, imported
to the USA by Apogee. Matches well with ribbon speakers.

VPI bricked and shun mooked VS110!

Reminds me of the time when 3 VPI bricks and 4 shun mook valve resonators were on my CJ, aside from an ebony platform, and combak harmonix TU210 feet. :)

is that a calculator on the floor at the back of the amp? what needs to be computed in order that a calculator has to be easy access? speaker position against room dimensions? what are those acoustic treatments on the front wall?

Wow! :o Given that you have not upgraded since '92, is it safe to say that you have realized your own aural nirvana with your current setup? With a humbling audio room and setup such as yours, I wouldn't be surprised at all if you have. Thank you for sharing your pics w/ us jadis! :)

Hyperion,

yup, those bricks I hand carried from the States way back in '86. Indispensible,
and the mooks are great, I may be needing more.

you got sharp eyes, man. well, as silly as it sounds, my digital
voltmeter always leaves a few hundred millivolts in it, meaning, it
does not zero out. So I have to deduct that number to the reading
for my tube bias. The option is to buy a new digi voltmeter, but
a calculator is cheaper :)

The stuff at the front wall are corner tube traps, I did it myself,
trying to replicate the original tube trap concept. did that in '92.

My pleasure, Racio. This room is the 4th room that I designed, and
I incorporated all things learned from experimenting with the 3 rooms.
My first room had eggtrays on the ceiling. (Mang Dima, to this day,
tells people about that always when introducing me to a new
audiophile ) Since '92, I actually downgraded, on power amp,
and loudspeaker, in terms of price; but I am just as happy musically.
Tweaking is paramount in my books. Frankly, I wouldn't have bought
the power amp and loudspeakers if it were not for some peer
pressure. But I admit I enjoyed them. And Im not a fool to claim
that the ARC is the same sound as the Jadis or that the 800s are
equal to the Maggies. I realized the new stuffs' limitations, and
with that in mind, and knowing and accepting what I truly am
looking for in the sound spectrum, truly, as you suspect, I
can say to myself I have reached the audio nirvana. Audio
is a zen thing, imo.

no, they are stainless tube hats called TopHAT developed by
Vintage Tubes of Michigan. But they got something better
that fits into the tube itself, made of brass, shaped like a ring,
I forgot the name. I have those hiding behind the RCA boxes and
one tube is actually sitting on 3 brass rings. Am not using them
at the moment.

Splendid stash of tubes you have there jadis! A box full of NIB Telefs on the right! Really really nice! But I can only make out some of them, like the KT88s, 6DJ8s and 7025s. What type/brand are the rest of them if I may ask? Thanks.

Hi Jadis, I agree with Racio. Where did you get those Mullard 10M's? Are those with gold pins? BTW, I love your setup...always dreamed of owning a pair of electrostats but don't have the room and money right now.

rs241,
Glad you like my setup. I got those Mullard 10Ms from a friend many years ago. It
is NOS, never used, and have gold pins. The box is intact and inside the foam supporting
each tube is still solid. I heard in HK they are priced like the legendary Tele803s. In one
shootout there, the 10m's beat all the 12Ax7s ever to be produced on this planet.

Racio,

The purple blue boxes on the left are the Mullard 10Ms, then there are Mullards
6922, which the Brits call CV2492, I love these types. Then RCA 7025, then GE and Sylvania
5814 and 6189 which are military types of 12AU7. Then I also have Mullards 12AX7, a
matched pair. Siemens 12AU7 and Tele 12AU7s. Im planning to shoot for the starts and get
some Tele 803s and 802s, and the king of the 6922 family, the CCa...A friend brought some
of these to try out in my system and they were fantastic.
