Reviving my old and limited lp collections in 80's (up to 1991). shipped back to manila from
the province, and started to clean them one by one. glad to listen to these albums once again
after 22 long years. so glad i have never disposed them.

part of the memories . . .

My choice for best listening music in 2013 - probably the fastest hands on piano.

In my own quest to find audio nirvana, it was slow and characterized with patience.
But little did i know that my search was in fact going back in time.

fascinating to learn about one historical vintage speaker. :)

Then suddenly, here I am, back in the 50s enjoying listening to the recently restored AR2ax (the European version
of legendary AR3a).

Remarkable and genius sound engineering design. The looks can be deceiving. But the sound of audiophile music has
really never changed the past 60 years.

Very happy!

Atty Rene,

how much (ilang watts) does this speaker need in order to sound like it was meant to? the AR3a needs something like150-200w, if i am correct.

Kabubs, these are the spex:

Specifications AR-2ax
Sensitivity: 91,5 dB
Response: 42 Hz to 20,000 Hz (± 2 dB)
Recommended Amplifier Power: 20 watts RMS,
Minimum impedance: 8 ohms
Enclosure: sealed type (acoustic suspension)

With the tandem of el34 dynaco st70 and pas3 (SII), the AR2ax really sings well and clear. all parts still original except the solidwood box and reconed woofer. parang all 50's era. ;) haven't really tried the ar3a, but most reviews considered the two similarly at par with each other (Hi Fi Stereo Review).

ps.

I just learned this now - ar3a is 4ohms with sens of 83db. kaya mahirap I drive. maybe, the review referred to the excellent quality and equality of sound between the two. tnx kabubs. :)

thanx for the reply, Atty.

the AR speakers, i reckon, have that classic "East Coast" sound which can tend to get a little "dark" --- but not in a disadvantageous way. i have a pair of AR3as and i love them. never will part with them. yun nga lang, it needs a lot of ooomph from an amplifier, medyo demanding lang lalo na kung tubes ka all the way. very little option except to go for push-pull design. but you know what? my AR3as were capably driven by your brother's 6c33c monoblocks! i could hardly believe it. that was just a rating of SET 18 watts at best.

nevertheless, i don't want to steal the thunder from your AR2ax. the only suggestion i have to say is to push the EL34 aside and connect 6c33c monoblocks to hear what the difference is like :) :) :)

Wow! That’s awesome.

I honestly thought you are using your sexy33 amps for a different set of
speaker. Really great to hear that you have the AR3as. At least, hindi
ako nag iisa.

Steal the thunder? Not at all fren. That’s just a verse from a little
river band’s song. In fact, im very happy that AR has a distinguished
follower here, and share the same love. ;)

The AR2ax is actually a scaled down version of the AR3a at 8 ohms
and high sens of 91db. Understandably, the 2ax I believed was marketed
for Europe which has no 4ohms standard for audio. my pair was
made in holland with all American parts and alnico drivers (same as 3a).

After a few listening hours, I found the el34s more than enough to
drive the 2ax and still enjoy the vintage and unique sound of the
ARs. The Kenny Rogers’ vocal standards really revealed the true quality
and timeless character of the 2ax (and 3a of course). smooth low bass
frequency. Parinig naman nyan syo. ;)

with this kind of ugly look, still couldn’t believe how I fell in love with
this speaker instantly. :)
