Arrived: Super rare Tung Sol Engraved Base 45 globe tube

Postby vintage_dog » Mon Sep 29, 2003 6:49 pm

$375/pair

Tubes share the same code (12-2), indicating a production date of the 12th week in 1932. I have never seen a cleaner pair of older 45s. A very rare tube! Both have very clear glass with no loose material inside. Tubes were tested for transconductance (results below), gas, shorts and life. These tubes are a perfect match on both transconductance and current draw.

Test Results:
1640/25.8 and 1640/25.8 (transconductance/current draw)

Matched! and near-NOS!

Minimum: 1170 gm [/b]

jm, this rare pair came from a tube collector who also deals at ebay, but this one was a "special"...

rene, this is the best pair among the globe 45s i have coming (super matched, super strong)...am not sure i'll get a better one in my lifeftime

actually, sobrang ganda and rare i will also end up not using them in my amps...so i decided to sell them na lang and settle for the other globes...

ah, this crazy hobby talaga...

The 45 Special is actually a primary version of the VT52, the plate structure is the same as with my tungsol st bottle VT52 and slightly different from my WE VT52. If I am not mistaken the filament voltage of that tube is 7V-7.5V.

The 45 Special was used in the BC series navy shipborne radio equipment in the mid 30s but it was rendered too fragile for military use, so they went back to the drawing board and got the basic 45 Special geometry and integrated anti vibration measures thus born the VT52. The is the only remaining VT52 type/variant missing from my VT52 collection.
