Jon,
I hosted some friends Saturday afternoon. We had two Dynaco ST-70s and one new Bob Latino VTA ST-70. The Latino amp uses the VTA board and upgraded power supply transformer.
I messed up and set the bias on the VTA ST-70 too low ~30mA. So it did not sound nearly as good as it should have. We did not know the bias resistor in the new amp was ten ohms (15.6 is stock) at least that’s my excuse.
The VTA still sounded better than a totally rebuilt Dynaco ST-70! What was really interesting to us was how it sounded with the USSR Army surplus 6PS3-E tubes. Even with the very low bias those tubes sounded great. They had zero hours on them and we hope to do some more listening this weekend. We plan on rolling some KT66 and KT88 tubes too, this time with appropriate bias settings. If you are interested I will post results next week…Regards Dan
