What preamp have you tried with the ST70? What is your comment? Thanks.

I've tried a simple passive, a passive based on a transformer vol control, a stock 4play, and a tube rectified 12au7 preamp. I like the latter the best.

It retains the transparency & dynamics of the active preamp while adding the easy, romantic sound of tube-rectified preamps w/o sacrificing speed.

moz,

is the tube-rectified 12au7 tube preamp you used for the St70 like the WS preamp?

thanks

It's not the same. Maybe Mickey, Arnold, Ed or Francis can expound on the WTB Preamp.

Im now using the wiredstate preamp. Great match for the Dynaco. It gave more life to the ST70.

Hey guys just wanted to ask how much is the Wiredstate preamp and the tube-rectified 12au7 tube preamp? Might buy an ST70 and a preamp for the tino's. good match daw plus the price is reasonable compared to buying a CJ or an MF pre amp/amp combo.

Required ba pre-amp for ST70?
For example, my source is a Cayin A50CD.

Rene makes good Passive Volume Controls, I suggest you look into that. The Cayin can drive the ST70 nicely, with 2V output (paki check na nga din...)

I'm using a MF pre/power combi for my concertinos. Busog na busog ang speaker ;)

For those who may not know my advice for those looking for a good preamp, first and foremost, you have to look at the POWER SUPPLY. Been an audiophile for 28 years, if the power supply is cheap, then it can not sound good.

QED passive pre-amp (bought from 5th ave way back) and st 70 mk2 driving sf speakers, surprisingly great sound! not sure though if this would count since the orig st 70 would have a different characteristic (maybe even design) with the st70 mark 2, nonetheless try borrowing a passive, better yet check out the ads section if the promitheus tvc is still available, request for an audition :D

I do not think that this is entirely accurate. For a DHT preamp, the power supply is certainly very critical, but for other circuits, such as Aikido, it is not nearly as critical. Would you explain further what you mean by cheap?

when I say cheap, it means not too much consideration was invested on the power supply of the preamp. I am not talking about custom made ones because even the commercially available models, a big number of them scrimped on the power supply section of their models. They try to augment it by making good the signal inputs and or the output section. Doing this makes it really profitable for them. Power supply section is a stage a maker should put his money in. look at the real high end preamps.
