What Dynaco gear do you own?

What Dynaco gear do you own?

Postby vintage_dog » Fri Oct 31, 2003 9:36 am

let me start...

the very first Dynaco gear I got was an ST70 -- it had a modern Sound Valves board which replaces the hard to find 7199 driver tube with a more-available 6bq5, 6bl8, 6u8a and 7687 driver tubes...

then i got another ST70 (now sold) with a welbourne labs board

other dynaco:

- PAS2 and 3's...must havehad 6 througout the years..only keeping one pas2 (i like the faceplate)

- dynaco sca35 integrated amp using 6bq5's...i had about 8 of these...only 3 remain...one is a stock factory-wired one

- my one and only love: the rare ST35 with an even rarer potted Dynaco OPTs...modded with auricaps...considered as the best sounding Dynaco amp of all time...

I got a stock ST-70 from Rene which I have restored. I replaced the phenolic driver board with a mil-spec one of the same circuit. This allowed me to retain the components in the same layout as the original.

The selenium rectifier has been replaced. I also upped the capacitance of the PS which resulted in tighter, more defined bass as well as cleaner, extended highs.

I replaced the Black Cat coupling caps will Illinois from Francis. I also replaced the speaker binding posts with 5-way gold-plated ones. Everything else is stock.

Next in line is to replace the sockets with ceramic ones w/ gold-plated pins. Regulation for the 7199 heaters and individual bias pots.

My love affair with the ST70 :)

1989 - Bought my first Dynaco ST70 for P7,000 :)

1993 - Sold the ST70 for P10,000 :(

1993-1994 - The dark years. Tried different tube, solid state, hybrid amps, but was never happy. :x

1995 - Bought another ST70 for P12,500 :)

Present - That ST70 is still with me. :) Guess how much a stock ST70 costs today.....

I think that the price appreciation on these classic amps have outperformed many of the stocks listed on the exchange today judging by your acquisition costs. Moral, sell your stocks and buy vintage audio gear. :D At least you enjoy them while you own them. Ever tried listening to a PLDT stock certificate?

Wait a minute, that would put me out of a job...

Until my check clears, I would not want to call myself a Dynaco ST-70 owner but rather a custodian. Nonetheless, I've been slowly immersing myself in the warm, engaging sound of this fabulous piece of audio history...

There is an ST70 at Sensible Audio. :) From the looks of it, it is still practically stock. The board is still original. :) The only thing I see new on the unit are those orange caps on the board, instead of the usual "Black Cats".

The price :?: I'm sure its still negotiable once you get to talk to your nearest Lito Gelano. :) But ask Raul, the salesman, and he will tell you, P35T.

My first tube pre-amp was a Dynaco PAS3. :) Nice pre-amp :!: :) Even nicer when I had it upgraded by Hypertriode. :)

I also had the integrated SCA35. :) Cool sound from EL-84s. :)

I don't have 'em no more. :(

My Dynakit Gear

Power Amplifiers:
1. Mark II monoblocks. One is mint, the other half needs restoration. Two EL34’s per mono operating at 50 watts AB continuous, 120 watts peak. 5U4GB rectification.
2. Mark III monoblocks. I have five of these i can use for a 5 channel home theater set-up or SACD/DVD-Audio multi-channel amplification though only a pair is operational. 60 watts per monoblock. Tube complement: 2 - Kt88’s/6550’s, 1 - 6AN8 and 1 - 5AR4/GZ34.
3. Mark IV monoblocks. The monoblock version of the Stereo 70 though rated at 40 watts rms. Highly collectible though not as good-sounding as the Stereo 70.
4. Stereo 70. Need i say more?
5. The elusive ST-35. I’ve been looking for this but no luck. Lucky V_D!

Preamplifiers:
1. PAM-1 monos. These underrated Dyna mono preamps sound frighteningly close to the Marantz 7 once properly restored.
2. PAS-2. Another giant-killer once properly restored. Classic tube sound with a very good phono stage and tone controls. 4 12AX7’s and 12X4 tube rectifier. A minor revamp on the filament power supply (selenium to silicon diodes and beefed-up capacitance) and you’re on the path to tube bliss.
3. PAS-3. Same as PAS-2 except for champagne gold face plate (brass for the PAS-2) and additional caps on the tone control circuit.

Integrated Amplifier:
1. SCA-35. Very good-sounding 6BQ5/EL84-based integrated amp with a good tube phono stage. Very natural-sounding thanks to its passive line stage. Output transformer A410/Z565 is one of the best ever made.

Tuner
1. FM 2
2. FM 3

ST70

bought first ST70 for 3,500 in the late 80s, sold to my compadre together with AR SP3A cause he did not have enough money to buy the AR SP5. ended up buying the SP5. my first audio blunder!

had 4 ST70s since then. purchased stock. learned to DIY with these units. did resto jobs, beefed up the PS section. gave away 2 ST70s to friends. gave 1 to a brother. ang bait ko!

SCA35

yanked out the output transformers and made me a 6BQ5 PP. very nice, sweet sound, i like the EL84s very much. lent to a friend. btw, i'm looking for another unit. i want to give my daughter a tube amp for her room.

PAS3

still have two. one is used as a test jig for preamp designs, the other was modified with regulated heater voltages, and a phono and line stage copied from some magazine. both have ALPS black beauty pots and the usual gold jacks, etc. caps used were polyprops which were the SOTA then.

FM3

aligned by an old timer DIYer who knew his stuff and had the equipment (signal gen, oscilloscope) to do the job. havent listened to it in years.

ST35

i owned one in my dreams!
