ST70 Speaker matching

Postby marty_e » Tue Nov 18, 2003 4:13 pm

I don't know if you guys are familiar, or have come across with this one, but I am using a Spica TC50 for my ST70.

Dunno how i missed this but you have a Spica? :o To think i started this thread. i've read about this a lot, this and the TC60 and am intrigued. How does the TC-50 and 60 differ? Any characteristics that really stand out? Thanks for any insights you might share.

IMHO, and in my system, and in my room, the 60 had more body in the mid-bass to bass, a bit more oommph in that department. :) But I still preferred better distinction between individual instruments and more air in the mids of the 50. :) Overall, vocals on the 50 was a lot better. :)

The 60's soundstage was deeper (maybe because of the weightier bottom  ), but the 50's soundstage was wider. :)

If you are not in critical listening mode (not in the sweet spot), and listening off-axis, the 60 seems to be more balanced and tonally correct than the 50. :) The 60 seemed to have a bigger sweet spot requirement than the 50. :)

The 50 hates walls and smallish rooms like mine. :( Its wants to breath. With small rooms, you only have a single person sweet spot. But go to that sweet spot, and you will understand why "audiophiles" went gaga over these Spicas during the 80s. :)

In short, the 60 is more balanced, and easier to set-up. :) Sort of a "Jack of all Trades, Master of Nothing" type of thing. The 50 on the other hand is more of a specialist. No real deep bass to speak of. :( What I like about it though is its midrange magic which the newer 60 sort of lost. :)

Thanks M Shoe Maker, I noticed from previous posts Lito may have a pair for sale. Care to enlighten me on what a fair price for these might be? PM me if you can. Many thanks.

The Spicas had an original price of US$550. :)

I got mine from Lito in 1993 or 1994 thereabouts. I think I got mine for P12T to P13T. :)

Last time I saw TC50s from Lito was last year. He was selling the pair for P15T. :)

Depends really on how tall you are, and how high your listening chair is. I'm using 24 inch stands with adjustable spikes. :)

marts,

I think the ST 70 can even match with Tannoy mx3s.....should drop by my place...it is about 63 meters away from your place. Currently listening to Alan Parsons Project-I robot....and it drives it just like how I would like to hear it.

You have to partner the B&W's with an amp that packs considerable power in order to make them sing. Or you can mate the st 70 with speakers having higher sensitivity. My opinion only.

i agree with neutral & expert audition. i still have my all orig st70
panor version with solidstate rectification. it may also depend on
what load you are going to use the speakers with your st70's impedance,
whether on 8ohms, 4 or 2 ohms tap. im using 90db at 8ohms tap.

L S 3 / 5 a

I'd look into something in the vicinity of 87db 8ohms upwards. Prime candidates include VSA VR-1 and its cousin, the LSA standmount, Hyperions, Rega, Triangle, Dali. I'd stay away from maggies, dynes and B&W's for now. Even sonus fabers may give the ST-70 a bit of a tough time...

The VSA VR-1 is now out of production. A pre-owned can go as low as Php45k and up but seldom you see owners letting go of this baby.
