Best replacement

Postby handyboy » Mon Aug 01, 2005 12:42 am

I have a spendor Ls35a. If i decide to sell it. What would be the best speaker to replace it having the same clarity and life like imaging? :? but with better low end.

Thanks for you help in advance!

I know it's an "if." But if you indeed sell your spendor LS, you're making a big mistake.

Why not get a "contender" to its sound that will have more base and omph.

Dynaudio would be one. Sonus another. VR I've heard will will you more base. Right Jack, CIA? There's been discussion about the Dynaudio's base here lately.

The thing is, the LS has its own authentic sound that seems like no other. I wouldn't sell it for that, and a piece of history!

There are many contenders: VR-1, Concept 2, Ikon 2, etc.

Best to audition, audition, audition...

Gagambs why not try the Spendor SP 9/1 or BC-1. Same British monitor flavor-wider range. At the same time, throw the ls3/5a away to me...

The BC 1 is an LS 3/5A in big boxes. They're not as expensive. Marty e can inherit yours. No one loses here.

Sell yours to me tapos bahala na    ehem...ehem...

Dude, payong kaibigan, that's a keeper. Huwag mo nang bitawan. If ever as Raf said add a sub. Even a baby REL quake should do the trick. Kung tutuloy mo talaga you know my number.

Kier, LS is chocolate , VR-1 is Chocolate Marble (May Vanilla na naka-halo ), hanap ni Gamby Chocolate na may Buo-buong Hershey kisses. Same flavor more intensity.
The thing is nobody makes chocolate the way the LS does. Closest na would be the new Harbeths and Spendors daw. Haven't heard them though.

New harbeths and spendors are modern sounding. Sound better with solid state. They have the coherence and midband clarity of the LS 3/5a in the BBC trad, but the LS is slower, more deliberate in fleshing out the music. Throws a deep soundstage and stays well focused. Extremely tube friendly.

Put a price tag, and ask for bids if you wish to sell it. That's how valuable they are. Yes, I like what you said Jack: "The thing is nobody makes chocolate the way the LS does." The thing is these speakers inspire!

Is it a Strata or a Storm III? Storm III would go well with my Maggie 1.6QRs.

Gambs we'll hi-jack your thread now since nobody believes you'd ever part with a Spendor Bi-Wire anyway!

I for one never regretted selling my LS35a that I used for almost 2 years. Not that its a bad sounding speaker. By all means, its a great speaker, but like all things, these babies got limitations.
There are many speaker choices you can consider in replacing these but the midrange clarity might not be the same as the LS. Theres something in the midrange of the ls that makes them pretty special.

Precisely my point too. Why sell it? Just add something it does not have.

Truth is there are many speakers that one can like. But the LS's authenticity in the midband is something I have yet to discover with other speakers. I call this "authentic" sound. I don't know how to explain it, but it's that deliberate slow progressive layered sound in space that gets me all the time I give it a listen. Not that I don't listen to other speakers as well coz I do, and I get to like what I hear as well. So one's audio quibble about anything audio (I have plenty), speakers, amps, and what not, is as normal as breathing and craving amongst audio fans who always wish there were something else in their system that it hasn't got.

For such a small speaker, at nearfield, they are champions in their limited (faults that turned out as their advantage) way.
