Handwritten serial numbers?

Handwritten serial numbers?

Postby mach1 » Mon Sep 24, 2007 12:15 pm

I recently started my quest to find a pair of Ls3/5a's!

Anyway, I came across this fella who emailed me and said that he has an old pair of ls3/5a's for sale which are very early editions with handwritten serial numbers.

How can I know whether these are authentic or not? Have there ever been any fake Ls3/5as?

My Unico amps have handwritten serial numbers. I always suspected that they might be pirated versions!

Good idea. I'm planning on meeting up with him sometime this week though. He hasn't given me a price yet. I hope it's not too cost prohibitive, in which case I'll pass...

handwritten serial numbers

Postby odaey » Tue Sep 25, 2007 7:55 am

Hi,

most 15 ohm rogers had handwritten serial numbers maybe up to 27,xxx (rough estimate) before using the latter pressed numbers on the black tags at the back.

Inspecting the cross-overs( If the owner would permit) would be a good way to verify the age of the unit and if it coincides with that batch.

Just as kenckn said, ask for pics if possible.

Yes most 15 ohm are up to 27xxx serial number, but have some 15 ohm from 27-30000 using B110A, but 11 ohm Dividing ntework, try to inspect the x-over if possible, every time I bought LS3/5a, I always request the seller to show me the x-over even it's 15 or 11 ohm.

Update: i spoke to the seller and opted to not buy the speakers. It was teak colored with handwritten numbers. I thought it was a bit expensive at $1400 so I took a pass... I guess wishful thinking na ibibigay niya ng mababa kasi it has been in storage for about 2 years now. Pag meron na akong funds, I will reconsider.

Odaey,

Thanks for the link. I was viewed this last time but I saw only in the pics is KD 15ohms spendor but CIA Rogers 15ohms is none. Can you help how can recognize Rogers 15ohms so that I can pattern if I ask the seller to open.

main difference between 11ohm and 15 ohm x-over would be the auto transformers ( not the Optimus Prime variety)

First pic is that of spendor's 15 ohm. The second is that from a rogers 15 ohm serial number bracket falling between 10,000 to maybe 18,000.
Last is from rogers with serial numbers falling in the range 18,xxx plus to 27,000 where most white bellies belong.

hope this helps
