Try to audition the mordaunt-short 914s at 5th avenue either at shang or park square 1. Good luck on your speaker hunt :)

The Monitor Audio BX2 has been getting good reviews. Anyone heard them yet?

The local distributor should have them by late this year or early next year. Price is around P15K a pair.

because a 20k budget is better spent on other speakers not just a wharf.

PSB Image B6 is a good candidate. Audible Illusions, Spectra or Watt HiFi would likely have this.

From the opinion I used to receive in the UK wharfe used to be a great brand then about 20 years ago they shipped production away from the UK and lost a little focus and quality in the process.

The end result, at least in Europe, was that in the 1990's and early 2000's the wharfe's were seen as a good 'starter' or budget speaker but not brilliant by any means. There were simply too many better speakers out there for a few extra readies.

I myself bought a set of wharfe's in 1998 but only had them for a year - they look good, they have the biwiring, banana slots - everything you think should hit the mark but sadly they came across as thin and very tinny.

If you have 20k for one set of speakers there are much better but consider your sources also - your CD player your connects and wiring. If your sources are known to be dark and dark speaker set will just maker it all so umm.. well dark. IMO go for speakers that match your setup or breathe life into it :)

ps. I would go for B&W if possible with Marantz CDP (due to warm sig)or Arcam for something a bit more detail orientated but that is just my humble opinion and tastes lol - maybe a used 601 s2/s3

Before one think about wires for a 20K speaker budget, better get the right speaker first. Since very early in PinoyDVD (wala pang Wiredstate), I've said a couple of times, that to me, Wharfdale is ngongo. Even the later incarnations up to 9 series, same, same.

So I would not put the cause on where it's made.

more or less i have the same series as yours and i would have to agree it being thin....however you will be surprised if you drive it with a vintage receivers such luxman, marantz, and sansui which gives it a good roundness.

the newer models are too boxy for audio.

I think that proves my point about matching with amps and cdp's :) At the time mine was a Yamaha receiver/amp 5.1, maybe about 70w per channel, not sure, too long ago now but the combination just didn’t work, then a Kenwood THX 5.1 just made is worse so out with the old and in with the new - best design your setup from scratch - what goes with what?

If you buy randomly based on the sales, what people suggest you just get a hotch potch of clashing components and the 20k speakers will suffer indirectly.

Marantz has always been one of my buddies fav manufacturers and for cdp I do like them but have not touched them in years with my focus now more on tubed experiences on the mini or mobile side.. oh well my loss lol.

^ in just a few months i replaced the wharf modus with a dynes because i cant bear then anymore then being driven by a pioneer ht receiver. they was set aside for years (about 15 more or less) until i found the right match
