Re: WOOD LE CLEACH HORN, ALTEC 414 IN BASS REFLEX CABINET

Postby camotecue » Wed Feb 01, 2012 4:33 pm

My latest project - a simple 3-way system
Image

driver complements are: great plains 414 woofers, altec 902 for mids, and still unknown tweeters (the owner is undecided yet as to what tweeter to use). tested the speaker last saturday using my altec 802d (similar to 902 but with alnico magnet). cut at 800hz, the horn with the 802 can output satisfying high frequencies already that may eliminate the need for a dedicated tweeter.

thanks for looking.

thanks Dan. Can't say yet as the great plains woofers are brand new and still has to be broken-in. but like your altec 414, they match in terms of efficiency as you don't have to use a lot of attenuation for the mids. all i can say is that i'm really amazed by what the 414 can do in the right cabinet. nice bass and low mid. you have proven this already. no need for a subwoofer for most types of music.

sir,

the speaker is resting on the floor with 12" x 12" tiles when the picture was taken. it's around 17x21" i think.

John, fix your sched na so you can hear one of larry's creations. Or maybe two since Ramon (amonv) also lives nearby.

dan,

just finished tuning these speakers at the owner's new music room. i was not able to bring my camera so i just posted an old picture.
Image

the electronics are now entirely different and is not depicted in the picture. the set-up is now bi-amped using a mcintosh ss amp for the woofers and a pair of cayin 845 tube amp monoblocks for the mid-hi. xover is a driverack digital xover. same altec 291 mid drivers as yours in a pair of le cleach horns. you should listen to this. but i warn you - you may end up looking for a mcintosh amp. :)

sir,

you'll need a special lathe machine to spin big wood blocks.
