Any thoughts on Denon DL-102 mono cartridge?

Postby corrsty » Wed Jun 18, 2003 6:49 pm

Hi,

I have a spare Music Hall MMF 5 stock turntable which I like to use again. I'm contemplating on using a mono cartridge this time as I already have a stereo analog front end.

Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks a bunch!

I think that Music Hall is better suited to educating analog newbies especially analog virgins like me. I read my pre has a pretty decent phono stage. :D

russ, unless you can find me either a Garrard 301, EMT 930 or Thorens TD124, I'll be willing to trade up :D

seriously, i'm very curious as to how much i could be losing playing my mono records on a stereo rig. any thoughts?

hey corrsty,

If I'm not mistaken, the DL102 only has 2 pins. That would mean that you have to do something to your tonearm's 4 lead wire arrangement.

Why not get the Lyra Helikon mono.

the two pins of the DL-102 are longer thus it can accomodate the 4 wires.

Helikon Mono? that's too rich for my blood.

You are right! Its longer than the ordinary pins.

But you have a good point in having a mono cartridge. :P

I do find most of my Oldies Mono LPs to be very satisfying. Vocals are really "there". To think I'm only using a stereo cartridge. What more if a dedicated Mono cartridge is used. Hmmmmmmm....... 2nd tonearm and a mono cartridge  :?: Not a bad idea.

Corrsty,

Lots of mono LP's ? Why not wire your STEREO cartridge to MONO! At the RCA Jacks, You just simply solder a wire to connect L and R then L-Gnd and R-Gnd. This will be the same as using mono cartridge.

Wiring it that way will work. But for the pure mono cart it uses a different
stylus configuration it's not the usual V shape that found on stereo cart.

My bud Bryan has these mono set-up but with the Denon 102 it's a pure
vintage mono system consisting of Marantz consolete pre-amp and i think
a Marantz 2 amp driving a single Electrovoice Patrician the thing that i can
say is dynamics, dynamics, dynamics. Forget about soundstge imaging and all that Audiofile requirements just listen and have fun. Mono records
has less compression than stereo records because they contain only one
channel unlike stereo unless you go 45 RPM but you will need more vinyls.
