Tech Question on Audioengine A5+

Postby theta-rhythm » Wed Dec 02, 2015 6:11 am

My system currently is made up of an Audio Technica AT-LP120 hooked up to an Audioengine A5+, which has a built-in amplifier. I also happen to have ATH-M50x headphones, which I later realized I could not connect to my system because neither the A5+ nor the turntable has a headphone jack. I tried using a stereo mini jack-RCA plug and connected directly to the turntable, but that was just bad. I also tried hooking up through the speakers, but while the audio coming out my cans was better the audio on the speakers continued to play too. Still not a satisfying solution. I have thought of getting either an integrated amp or a receiver. And my questions are these:

    1. Is there a way I can hook up the Audioengine to an amp (or receiver) considering that it already has a built-in amp?
    2. Which is the better approach, integrated amp or stereo receiver?

I will appreciate any advice or info I can get from the masters of analog in this forum.

What you need is either a preamplifier or a mixer.

Any specific recommendations for a preamplifier?
