Recommended Female Acts on Vinyl

Postby sumnerbrowne » Sun Sep 20, 2015 6:38 am

Who would you recommend among the many female acts out there and which album of theirs is worth checking out on vinyl if one is still unfamiliar with their discography?

Please exclude the following:

Astrud Gilberto
Carly Simon
Carole King
Diana Krall
Eva Cassidy
Jennifer Warnes
Julia Fordham
Julie London
Stacey Kent
Stevie Nicks
Suzanne Vega
Tracy Chapman

Can't go wrong with Ella Fitzgerald. :)

For the newer acts, try Melody Gardot. Worrisome Heart is a good intro.

Cécile McLorin Salvant. She has three recordings out and two of them are issued on 180gm double LPs beautifully packaged in gatefold jackets from Mack Avenue Records. Start with her critically-acclaimed U.S. debut album "Woman Child". A true jazz artist! Excellent recording! :)

In no particular order and listed if i own 2 or more of their LP's (i.e. the first impressed enough to look for more)
Favourites noted, if nothing is noted, you cannot go wrong!

+1 for Sarah Vaughan (The Explosive Side of Sarah Vaughan)
+1 for Billie Holiday
Patricia Barber
Joan Baez (From Every Stage is a good "introduction")
Joni Mitchell
Bjork
Kate Bush (The Whole Story)
Betty Carter (i am still looking for more LP's or mint copies of what i have, sellers let me know....)
Aretha Franklin (apart from Jumpin Jack Flash, Aretha just does it for me, i think i first heard her voice while i was still in the womb)
Gloria Jones (Vixen)
Grace Jones (don't knock it till you try it, which is a comment not an LP title)
Cyndi Lauper (boys can have fun, which is another comment)
Peggy Lee (prefer live LP's and Fever is a must)
Alison Moyet (Alf)
Della Reece (i am still looking for more LP's or mint copies of what i have, sellers let me know....)
Nina Simone (i am looking for a mint or sealed copy of Pastel Blues)
Dusty Springfield (because she was in my early years)
Dione Warwick (i am not sure why i own anything of hers as she does nothing for me. Maybe she can do something for you)
Sandie Sheldon (if anyone finds anything on Okeh, let me know, maybe i can afford, maybe not)
Carla Thomas (King & Queen. OK not a lone female voice as it is a duet with Otis, it just means you get great value x2)
Randy Crawford (Street Life to begin, or anything with Bootsy Collins or Joe Sample in the credit list)

Judy Garland. (I own none but want Live at Carnegie Hall and any LP with Ol Man River, this is one track that could tempt me to buy a CD :$ )
