Vinyl in the Mainstream Press

In which we may report articles written about our favorite recording medium in the conventional (non-trade) press, such as CNN, USA Today, and other general audience publications.

The first is by James Pilcher in the Cincinnati Enquirer. He recently discovered the (fun?) art of dubbing his vinyl collection to CD-R and decided he did not want to use software to remove the ticks and pops. Pilcher apparently is a member of UTOT (Cincinnati chapter), although he misspells the brandname. I guess he is still probationary.

Geez! How could he spell TECHNICS as TECHNIQUES? :(

Bagsak kaagad sa question#1 of the application to be a member of UTOT!

So far, no applicant/current member of UTOT has made that sacrilegious blooper! We do have to maintain our high standards. :lol2:

Pagpasensyahan nyo ako. You know how I feel about our TECHNICS turntables... :D Puso ko...

Olrite. The writer is forgiven. After ol, it's still a TECHNICS--linear tracker pa. No wonder pusong mamon si KD about it. He does own a TECHNICS linear tracker too.

Fair enough?

KD- BTW, how does your linear tracker compare to your other conventional S-arm TECHNICS?

arnoldc- you may not own a TECHNICS, but your JVC DD ttable is malupit! It's at the same level of a SL-1200mk2 or better!

KD- I was wondering about the diff. What's nice is that both your tables are TECHNICS, so a comparison will be fair.

What if I bring the linear tracker when you audition the next DIY phonostage project? I think the SL-5 is, in the words of ihatejazz, a toy. But you might feel otherwise.

Hard to comment on the differences because, for one, the carts are different on the linear tracking and the S-arm. If I have time this weekend, I shall listen to the linear tracker again on my main system, and give some comments.

Our next article appeared in the Salt Lake City Weekly and was mentioned in the Vinyl Asylum. An excerpt:

Some say it’s an obsession, some say it’s just devotion to an art form that is, simply put, better when on vinyl. Just the sight of that big glossy 12-by-12 inch cover is enough to set some salivating. Whatever its many attractions are, or regardless of how they’re defined, what can’t be argued with is the fact that vinyl has made a comeback of epic proportions—even in this digital age of compressed files.

From the Louisville (KY) Courier-Journal:

Records' time to spin again
Vinyl albums make a comeback with younger music listeners

The Courier-Journal

Lyndi Curtis loves music and owns about 1,300 albums. She must have an iPod or a big CD wallet to store her collection, right?

Think again. Curtis, 22, listens almost exclusively to vinyl records, a format some thought would die with the generation that played them in 1960s and '70s.

But some in the industry say more young people are taking those old records off the shelf -- and adding new ones to it.

"Kids are definitely getting into vinyl," said John Timmons, who owns ear X-tacy, a music store on Bardstown Road in Louisville.

A main attraction of vinyl is a sound that is not as "sterile" as CDs, Curtis and others said.

"There's something so much better about having a fireplace than central heat, you know?" she said. "Albums to CDs is like, exactly that."

From today's Philippine Daily Inquirer front page.

This is supposed to be a pic of the library at Camp John Hay. Look closely at the shelves on the left. Are those VINYL RECORDS????
