Mandy's hand-made wooden tonearms!!

Postby vintage_dog » Tue Jan 13, 2004 10:15 am

Yes, be the first to audition this masterpiece by a true DIYer, MandyM. A true labor of love and pinoy ingenuity. Fully tested and tweaked over several months. This has been compared to more expensive tonearms and has the bass weight, clarity and impact of a true high-end analog system.

Listen and believe!

(saturday, 2pm at my place)

Shriver me timbers! "Kamagong" wood for a tonearm? Let's see it. How I'd love that on an AR platter. Hmmmmmm..... intriguing!

This you shouldn't miss:

- Hand-made wooden (kamagong) tone-arm with Grado wood MM cartridge and AR turntable.

- Bottlehead's SEDUCTION (suprise!) tube phonostage

- 'tono' preamp

- WS 300B amp

- Kamagong-finished Fostex mini-Voigt (another surprise!!)

An ALL-DIY set-up!!!

if time permits (and owners willing), we will have a friendly shoot-out with:

- Clearaudio TT of JM
- Michell TT
- Thorens TT

the proposed shoot out will not provide a conclusive comparison, as they are all entirely different. if we are to "find out" if the DIY arm is superior to commercial ones, then only the arm should be the variable.

"a friendly shootout" i take with a drum of salt...

the friendly "shoot-out" is among different analog set-ups NOT the tonearms alone. hope this clarifies. in other words, i'm curious how the AR/Kamagong/Grado would compare with Thorens/Grado set-up or the more expensive Michell/RB300/DL103

Sir Arnoldc - hope you could bring some rock LP's, if you have Whitesnake's "Slip of the tongue" (with Steve Vai on guitar) that would be great!

kapal ba?

although mandy could only stay 10 hours (while wife and child were at the town center), some guys continued on and tried the Denon DL103 on a Thorens 160 super and A-Bed the Peerless and Tamura step-ups...session ended 2am...

thanks guys...

to mandy, of course! we had fun...very nice tonearm and analog set-up indeed
to ambel...bringing the original, rare, expensive ($1100) WE 300b tubes and his DIY preamp!...
to arnold...helping in setting-up the TT early PM...sayang you missed the other goodies we tried...
to joel...for the chips, and helping set-up the DL103 on the thorens...
to JM...thanks for the Tamura step-ups :-)
to Mickey...for allowing us to use the Clearaudio cartridge alignment tool for the Denon DL103 ;-)
to ayie,
edrich,
ed, and
vince...for lending their ears and keeping us company...:-)

by the way, all throughout the 14-hour session, only ONE AMP was used (with flying colors)--
The Wiredstate tono 300B amp (prototype)
!!!....
