The people here generally believe in "to each his own", but if it is any indication, the recently introduced Wiredstate Tube Preamp is quite popular and has NO bass and treble controls.

I'm biased towards simple electronic designs so there is minimal degradation between the source and the speakers, hence, I am willing to trade the "flexibility" of having tone controls for signal path simplicity/purity.

That said, a well executed design and well-chosen parts with tone controls does not automatically mean it'll sound bad.

The decision to go Integrated vs. separate pre and power amps is largely driven by an audition. There are integrated designs that sound good, some sound bad. Ditto for separates.

Generally, integrateds offer better economy unless you'd use $$$ cables wherein it canbe cheaper to use monoblock amplifiers to get shorter cables. :D

Separates tend to be more complex. Pre and power amp matching becomes crucial, ditto for interconnects. Separates also require more real estate. If like me you live in a small apartment, that becomes an issue.

ganda ng options mo:

1. WS Pre-amp + WS TB2a3 = 9250 + 15000 = 24,250
2. WS Integrated amp (available Feb 2004) = <15,000

you can't go wrong with this?

Yes. Kulang nalang phono stage to play vinyl records. Yung preamp linestage lang.

tatalope-
If you get a line stage pre-amp (like the WS), you still have to buy a separate phonostage like a pre-owned Musical Fidelity X-LP. Average cost is about P5-6K pre-owned. Using such a device, you will need 2 pairs of interconects (or 1 pair if your turntable has built in interconnects). Factor this in to your total cost for your system. To save on money, look for a pre-owned preamp with built in phonostage or go for an integrated with built in phonostage. Usually the integrated will end up cheaper than separates.
