Turntable Conversion

Postby Quiel » Tue Aug 05, 2003 4:28 pm

How does one convert a mono turntable to stereo? Is that a function of the arm and cartridge?

I've seen several customized turntables with 2 arms -- wondering if one is mono and another stereo:idea:

Yes, some analog enthusiasts have more than 1 tonearm/cartridge combos on their turntables. :P Yes, some have 1 tonearm with a stereo cartridge, and another tonearm with a mono cartridge. :P

Some analog addicts have 2 tonearm/cartridge combos which are both stereo. The reason for this is that each tonearm and each cartridge have its own characteristic. In order to have more than one grouped (tonearm+cartridge combo) characteristic, the analog addict sets up two sets. Some analog addicts prefer a particular LP to be played in tonearm/cartridge combo A, while another LP is better played using tonearm/cartridge combo B. :P

Its just like "tube rolling" without the hassle taking-out, installing, and aligning the new tonearm/cartridge combo. :P

Some tables can even accommodate as many as 3 tonearm/cartridge combos. :P

Too many arms?

Once I saw three arms  on what looked like a Clear Audio table at one of the high end salons here. Two arms could be used for Stereo and Mono or one for standard LP’s another used for 180 gram LP’s. I have no idea what the three arm thing was about though....Dan

Yup, some Clearaudio models can accommodate 3 tonearms at a single time. :P

3 tonearms........ what would it be

1. Unipivot : probably a Graham 2.2 :P
2. 12 inch arm : probably a VPI JMW 12.5 :P
3. Linear Tracking : probably an Air Tangent (with remote controlled VTA adjustment)

Now, this would be the ultimate "Tonearm Rolling" machine.
