Tono Pre-Amp support

Postby TonyC » Wed Sep 28, 2005 5:02 pm

Consulta lang sana. My current system is a tono pre-amp, 2-T-Amp, bi-amping an old BW 601 spkrs and a NAD 521bee cd player. T-amp is Wow specially using it via the Tono pre-amp.

My problem is on the warm up time of the Tono. It seems at least 60 to 90 minutes ang warm up time ng tono bago tumunog ng tama. Is this normal? Yung isang tube ng Tono ko e may black mark sa top, parang nasunog although may nag sabi na ok lang daw yun. I think meron na ito when I bought it from Rene. Does this have any effect on the warm up time?

Hirap makinig sa gabi dahil by the time mag iinit na eh few songs na lang ang pwede pakinggan at dapat matulog na…aaahhhrrggg!!

Salamat sa advise!!

I also have a Tono pre-amp. My experience naman is when I give a slight tap to the case or slight vibrations, there were distortions.
Found out about this when I accidentally bumped my rack. What seems to be the case here?

thanks...

- loose pins of tubes on sockets. suggest you clean pins and re-set. some try to tighten the individual pin sockets.
- another possible cause is loose grounding which should be easy to correct
- loose connection of cables

if problems persist, call your doctor - 0917-897-0798 (toobs)

TonyC and dennispm,

you can also bring units at home (in Alabang) so i can test the tubes. should be easy to diagnose.

hi vintage_dog,

i have bought dennispm's tono pre-amp. there's a heavy distortion on the left channel when the tube is fully pushed in the socket. with a slight tap on the chassis there's also distortion heard. but when the tube is tilted a little bit backwards the distortion is gone. what seems to be the problem?

i already cleaned the tube pins and the problem still persist. how can u check if grounding is the problem? i am not in manila so it is difficult for me to send the pre-amp for repair. ok naman siya sa ngayon pero ayaw ko ng marinig ang distortion kasi kawawa ang speaker.

I should have 0-110-0-110. Just parallel them.

checked the tono inside wiring of mains transformer:

0v - black
110v - white
0v - brown
110v - orange

for 220v (now) line1- black, line 2 - orange with white& brown shorted.

for 110v - line1-black, line-2-white - do i need to parallel/short black to brown and white to orange, or just black and white for 110 is ok.

Tono violin preamp humming

Postby threadlock » Wed Jun 18, 2008 11:47 am

Is it normal for tube preamp to cause humming?
This is paired with a SS poweramp and im sure it's not the poweramp since I already isolated and tested the poweramp with another preamp/processor and it's not the one causing the hum.

I've checked all the connections and even tried a few times disconnecting and reconnecting and the hum is still there. All interconnects and wires used are brand-new.

Previously, I thought it was because I placed the preamp on top of the power amp. But I also tried spacing the two devices 2 feet away but the hum is still there.

I've also tried the ff. to check if the hum goes away, but all failed:
1. Reversing the AC power plug of the preamp
2. Used another poweramp
3. Used another set of interconnects and speaker wires.
4. Disconnecting all inputs to the preamp.
5. Using a cheater plug to convert the 3-prong AC plug to 2-prong AC plug

The hum is constant at all volume levels, and it's coming from the two speakers.
Both the tube pre and the poweramp is connected to a Panther powerstrip which is connected to a house outlet.
It's quite annoying since I can hear the hum at the listening position about 5 feet away from the middle center of the speakers.

The hum goes away when all is connected and there is music playing and I turned-off only the preamp. It takes about 30 seconds before the signal dies and in this duration, there is no hum.

Except for the annoying hum, the preamp-poweramp combo sounds great and is very musical, better than my Denon AVR.

Preamp: Tono violin (Tubes: RCA ECC8 rectifier; 2 x JAN CHY 5692 brown base)
Poweramp: Bada 5-channel
Source: Pioneer AV-600 DVD player
Interconnect: Audio Pro 2-channel Coaxial Cable
Speaker Wire: Generic Gauge 12
