Portable Turntable Impressions?

Postby dante » Mon Mar 24, 2014 3:32 pm

Has anyone tried the Motorino or Crosley or any other portable turntable? I am thinking of getting one for the novelty of it. I know that Jon Agner bought one for his daughter and would appreciate hearing his impressions of these TTs. Thanks!

Hmmm..... I had five of them: 2 went down with Ondoy, 1 ended its life, 1 I gave to my officemate as remembrance, and the one remaining I use for my photoshoot ;) :)

Yup, get the one with radio, while the phono option gets a few minutes of play, its the radio that you'll be using more often.

Is it true that the cart on it might damage my LPs bros? :D

Well, unless you try putting a one peso coin on the headshell, or try to scratch it ala DJ, the VTF is too light to actually do damage to the vinyl ;)

Oh, and yes, don't expect that it'll run exactly at 33 or 45 rpm

the older ones uses ceramic which is has a much bigger stylus. i think this time most crosleys and motorino comes with an audiotechnica mm cartridge which is similar to most new production entrylevels standard turntables (audiotechnica, pyle, denon, rega) have. what it differ though is... arm is shorter so it doesnt follow the regular say baerwald arc. i havent measured the weight but it could also be a factor for record wear. arc and weight are preset btw.

Thanks for the replies bros. I'm not keen on paying 9k for a radio so I guess I'll pass on these portables for now.

Novelty. Check.

Aesthetics. Check.

Conversation piece. Check.

Room accent. Check.

Sonics. Fail.

But this is just me. For others it could be step one in a long and winding analog adventure.

for 4K to 7K, you can get a TT that is several leagues better than the plastic portables now being marketed to cadets in the hobby.

Monitor the marketplace for vintage starter models of Pioneer, Sony, Technics, Denon, Trio, or even the newer entry-level Ion, Numark, and Akai. There are even some vintage Technics SL1200 clones under different unknown brands for novice DJs , but similarly built like a tank , and you can get for roughly 6K with headshell/cart already.

This will save you the itch to upgrade immediately, and will also save your precious records' grooves from being carved by the less-than-ideal fixed tracking force and angles of these portables' stylus.

I had Numark PT01 for a year. Good siya pag no choice (wala kase ko mahanap ditong maayos) pero kung meron ibang options mabuti ng iwasan. Mahirap na lalo na kung papatugtugin mo mga brandnew na plaka :( I had a few records that was damaged because of it. Siguro hindi lang ako maingat pero bat ganun?

In a perfect world, these marketing gimmicks would not exist, and people new to vinyl would not have to part with their hard earned cash to quickly discover their pile of pretty plastic is not scratching their itch or even worse, scratching their new vinyl and turning them away from vinyl.

If i can put together a reasonably decent sounding TT from parts , then anyone can do it.
Who needs portable vinyl anyway? There is this new idea i heard about for portable music - mp3.

How about a WS DIY TT kit....
