underrated drummer is phil collins. any genesis album with him drumming shows off his skill. the live albums of course has chester thomson (used to drum for zappa) on drums while phil sings. :)

but phil collins had a jazz band called brand x in the 70s. his virtuosity as a drummer is evident in "unorthodox behaviour" album in songs like "nuclear burn" and "euthanasia waltz". :)

I just heard this last night KNOCK OUT Talaga !!!, tapon mo na yung sheffield drum test track !!!

Audio_Tyro wrote:Charly Antolini's "Knockout" 180-g vinyl. As the album liner suggests, this is an audiophile legend. The drums definitely can knock out with their power and speed. Includes guitar and percussion as well. Warning: only for systems that can handle drum power and transients well.

susie ibarra, 1 of the best young jazz avant garde (some say she is the best) drummers. she's fil-am. pls see her website. i only have her flower after power cd. she is also the drummer in william parker: peach orchard. saw her 2x; she's very good.

her latest is folkloriko, which is about the life of a filipino farmer. i think she also released a duo drum cd with denis charles.

"tom sawyer" by rush, ok din. neil peart is a top-notch drummer.

and let's not forget the dynamic power of stewart copeland in the police album "synchronicity"

Yup, the drum play is quite solid :), almost similar to the sheffield drum track album :)

That Neil Peart guy's still the best one around - sans rival.

aside from piano, the drums are one of the torture test for our stereo system, the dynamics and attack of this instrument..

it seems the usual suspects would be ed blackwell, tony williams, jack dejohnette, elvin jones, ronnie burrage, billy higgins, andrew cyrille, steve mccall, pheeroan aklaaf, don moye, billy hart, roy haynes.

my fav though is hamid drake (see his cds with william parker. he and parker are said to be the best jazz rhythm section around.)

also, denis charles and sunny murray (see eremite.com. captain of the deep is one of my fav cds).

i am also very fond of kevin norton since he is a very nice guy and appreciates very much the people and the camaraderie in community centered gigs. he has his own label, hopscotch. i like his "for guy debord" cd. anthony braxton also released a double cd on hopscotch, featuring a fine young guitarist named, o'neil (forgot first name).

among the younger ones, i like chad taylor of chicago underground, ben karatnick, chris corsano, jay rosen, and gerald cleaver. Geoff mann, son of herbie, is also good. the son of gunther schuller, forgot his name, is also ok.

also, barry altschul since he somehow pops up on my fav records. lou grassi is very catholic - from very traditional to really out. walter perkins seem to be of the same nature.

han bennink is said to be one of the best alive. according to an acquaintance (who has 3,000 cds, and who buys at least 3 cds when i see him in concerts), his solo LP/CD is the best percussion performance ever recorded.

gerry hemmingway of the UK is also great. see "whimbler" on the portugese label, clean feed records.

last but not the least, susie ibarra. of course i'm a little biased since she is Filipina.
