to all who signified their interest before in building a sub-35k amp-speaker system.

please let me know if you are still up to it? :)

if not, we will just convert this room as a DIY music room to showcase audio creations by WS members :)

Yung speakers ni Trod93 baka puwede na :)

In my case, if I won't be able to build a new speaker cabinet, I'll make use of my old MLQT fitted with the new drivers I got from Anthony Audio :)

Clarification lang po.

Will this be the same room that Val and The Star will sponsor? If not, then, other diy creations can be displayed in the Val/The Star's room, I guess.

DIY Showcase Room

PostPosted: Thu Oct 11, 2012 12:37 am
by vintage_dog
Hi all,

based on the inputs and suggestions by some of you, we are modifying the room event from a DIY shoot-out to a DIY showroom :)

basically, we will utilize the room (446) to showcase the local creations (DIY) of the various members. anyone can join so long as they meet the following criteria:

1. total system cost excluding the source should be no more than 35k for an amp/preamp and speaker combo
2. it is a DIY project that is assembled locally
3. the system should play music :)

the objective is to challenge DIYers to build the best sounding system within a budget of only 35k.

please coordinate your entries with Jon Agner and kabubi who will help manage the event. please indicate your build cost and your possible selling price if interested to sell AFTER the show. participants should be responsible for their gear. no software will be allowed to be sold in the DIY room.

the room will also be a common area to hang-out or chill. drinks, food and more drinks will be available :)

cheers!

Tony,

As I recall, audiostar's room is more of a visual and aural representation of his audio journey, the individuals that will showcase their gear are those that he has collaborated with in the past. This room naman is for the original 35k challenge for DIYers that was planned before.

I am hoping that both you and tony can finally showcase your own creations.

nag uusap din kami ni val on how best we can optimize both rooms. the objective at the end of the day is we (val's and this room) provide a venue to showcase the various local creations. based on what val has shared with me, his room will highlight some local "hi-end" stuff. room 446 aims to challenge sub 35k systems.

so we encourage more folks to take advantage of this opportunity...sayang, baka bawiin ni tonyboy ang room hehehe

Thanks for the clarification, sirs.

Ok, Jon, I'll start and let the ball roll.

Some advised me not to post my speaker build for some reasons, but, I thought, what the heck, it'll all be for fun and camaraderie anyway. So, here goes.

Drivers: Sony 4.5" fullrange (plastic coned version with whizzer cones)

Enclosure: Folded Voigt pipe

Dimensions: 6"(w) x 11.25"(d) x 36'(h)

Image

Image

Build cost:

drivers - php 500.00

baffle - 750.00

wiring - 5.00 (magnet wire)

binding posts- 186.00 (from deeco)

miscellaneous - 500.00 (glue, wood screws, sandpaper, transpo)

Cost 1,941.00 (bare)

Aesthetic cost:
+ 2,500.00 (wenge crown veneered plywood)

+ 400.00 (grills)

+ 600.00 (spikes)

+ 1,000.00 (paint and varnish)

+ 500.00 (miscellaneous)

Total Cost
php 6,941.00 (whipped)

Initially, I thought of building a pair that will feature unique vintage drivers, but, after checking the prices on the net, the cost to build them will overshoot my budget. My design goal changed radically. I aimed at building a pair at the lowest cost possible. I settled for the Sony 4.5" fullrange drivers which I have in stock. I know for a fact a lot have these as well. So, for the diyers and audiophiles out there, check them out at the Nov HiFi Show. You'll be quite surprised with these.

The question now is how much will I sell them, if ever. Depends on how I will showcase them during the show. Will I field them bare and showcase sub 2k speakers, or, dress them up, and, still, cost like a branded entry-level pair? Tignan na lang natin how they will fare in the challenge.

Thanks.
