So what preamp will be used? And who will provide the preamp?

I think it should be a complete system (integrated or Pre / Power combo ) except for the source, otherwise there could be a "mis-match", since you dont have the pre-amp during development. Plus I think the goal here is to have a amp / speaker system at less than 35K.

Yup..... a passive preamp stage (puwedeng wires and volume pot lang) integrated into the power amp will do the trick.

True, since digital naman ang source (and high gain din ang output), even a 2A3 can drive easily drive a high efficiency speaker with ease :), basing this from experience :D

So, if digital is the source, what dac will be used? What is the dac's output impedance?

Or are we extracting the analogue signal straight from the Ipod?

Joey, check VD's previous posts, he already mentioned that the source will be digital. The DIYers contribution to this challenge in only on the amp and speakers :)

Actually, meron pang isang consideration.... yung room ;) :D

OK, so everyone can assume that the Ipod (whether straight from the ipod or thru a DAC) will output an analogue line signal which will feed into the preamp/amp.

It is also possible kasi that one may bring an ipod dock and extract the digital signal and have their own DAC.........which will not be uniform for all.

So, all contestants will only supply the amp and the speakers.... no more no less

great idea. btw, it's not me who will "choose" the "winner", it will be a panel of judges (tbd).

VD...if the winner choosen by PANEL of Judges is NOT the speaker that you PREFER...would you accept the Panel Decision and buy the winner? :inlove:

With this much competitors (and more invites)...how large will the venue be??? to accomodate 8 "complete " systems! :worried:

first question, yes i am committed to award the prize money to the winner in exchange for the system. we will finetune the mechanics as we go. also, the DIYers are not building this for me but doing this for the opporunity to have a winning system and for the fun and challenge. hopefully, more folks will have renewed interest in the hobby and tube audio and counter the notion that to have a good sounding system, one has to spend a fortune.

second question, no idea yet :) still getiing inputs on how best to execute. any ideas? :)

for standardization and ease of use, the source will be an iPod which has a built-in volume adjustment. if a preamp is required, that cost must be included in the total cost. i have tested the iPod on various amp-speaker system without preamp and they work fine. folks can easily test their entries at their homes with their own ipod via the socket at the bottom and NOT the earphone out.

I have a 47 labs switcher I can lend for the event it can route the source or pre out into four different systems.

Contestants might need to bring long ICs (3 to 4m) though.

I think two batches of 4, a break for merienda, tear down and set up of second batch would be good. Lots of time for everybody to catch up with each other and cut's the venue size in half.

My 2 cents :)
