6C33

these are 6C33 tubes i ordered from Moscow, i am setting them up, burning in so to speak, these high transconductance tubes are prone to run-aways, so this burning-in is one way to mitigate such effects....filaments are wired in series for 12 volts and fed from a UPS transformer just discarded....the transformer has an unloaded voltage of 14volts......

since these tubes have been in storage for about 28 years(date code on the box says 1983), i found the pins are tarnished so that checking the filament continuity yielded an open circuit, scraping the pins by using fine grit sand paper restored contacts and confirmed thru the socket pins...

half an hour into the tests, i took some temperature readings:

these reading increased further after 2 hours, i plan to burn-in the tubes for 24 hours in total before putting them in service.

the next part of the testing program is to monitor power consumption using a power monitor:
wattage in total:

line frequency:

line voltage:

transformer primary current:

filament voltage:

total filament current:

from the test data, of the 184 watts consumed, about 34 watts is lost in the transformer and the rest on the tube filaments.
these are really hot tubes.....

based on these results, design of the power transformer can then be undertaken.....

A wealth of information is available here, respecting the care and feeding of this tube. http://www.goodsoundclub.com/Forums/Sho ... =6140#6140 The insights seem quite good and may prove helpful to you in your build. Best of luck with the project and do keep us updated.

thanks for reminding, i read romy the cat before, i just wanted to get a firsthand feel of how hot these things get.....and in Russia where ambient temps get as low as minus 30*C these tubes can really serve as room heaters....

i am thinking of heatsinking the filament fins.....even the sockets get really hot....

with 4 filaments running about 40 watts each and plates idling at say 25 watts a piece, that 260 watts of power just sitting idle....

hello Bong,

i did not realize that you were "over there", akala ko ikaw yung source ni Gerry ng tubes.....anyways, i am interested in the following tubes if you have them:

4D32, 833, 813, 6LW6, 6LF6, 6HF5, 6LQ6/6JE6 and their heater variants.....

also i'd be interested in rca sockets for the 829B tubes, even second hand is okey...

thanks..

30~50 watts, but to me wattage in not that important, i will go after sound quality more than power rating.... ;)

my 12 watter 6LU8 amp fills my listening area quite adequately to my liking....

Hi Tony,

I went thru my stash and found some sockets for you. These are the Johnson septar ceramics socket with vents. I knew I had some of those RCA plain jane somewhere, but I am going thru a lot of sorting right now. Will update you when I get to see them. About the tubes, yes I have those and will be testing soon. Pm me your address and I will do something for you. Here is a link to my mentor and adviser's place if anyboy is interested (sorry for the OT).

Hi Tony,

PM me values of intended PS caps you will be using for this project, also some other parts you want to use like internal chassis fan/s. Thanks.

thanks, i have the plate/bias transformer built up, i am working on a separate filament traffo....then the output transformer comes next, it will be 600 ohm anode to anode to 4,8 ohms secondary.....

^i have the power traffos already fabricated....working on the output traffo....i have not yet decided the final topology.....i was considering partial feedback scheme......the amp will ave no global negative feedback and will use all Russian tubes, 6j32, 6h23, the amp will be push-pull....

i am taking it slow...lots of amps to do.....

i am also rigging up the burn-in jig to test the tubes.....
