To sir Tony, I know audition is still the best answer but in your opinion what preamp topology would suit a power amp with 8417 power tubes and 5ar4 rectifiers?

Thanks,
Rob

this topology seems to have a following....
high open loop gains tamed by negative overall feedback
for consistent gain between channels and even lower output impedance....
if we were to gauge the success of the Musical Fidelity x10d tube buffers,
then you will probably like this preamp also as they use the same topology...

Image

notice the very striking similarity with silicon rey's preamp...
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/siliconr ... r-kit.html

notice that while a 6AU6 7 pin rf tube pentode and a 6V6 octal power tube used, they are connected as triodes...
operated at higher currents for lower output impedance...
but at relatively lower currents so that the tubes are not stressed in any way, therefore
long life for the tubes is assured....

i am building a clone but using the 13FM7 dissimilar triodes, another TV tube....

minor voltage tweaks and ready to go by Sunday....

my next pre-amp build will use the 3Q5GT (octal) direct heated pentode or the #30 direct heated triode (4-pin) using the #80 ST (4-pin) bottle rectifier...my first foray into directly heated cathodes tubes preamp...

i blame Gerry Sta Maria (523-7551) for giving me these tubes.... :)

Sir Tony,

I want to modify my existing 12au7 amp (TONO Pre-amp to be exact).

I want to focus on power supply. What I noticed, mine is running at 150V B+.

Which do you think is better 150V or running at higher rail let say ... 250V B+.

Plan to go CLCRC. If i want to control at 8ma for the B+ do I need to add R on the
last C? I want to limit the current since I have a pair of UTC A20 that I can add
in the circuit.

if you consider that the input voltage is about 3 volts peak and the output at say 18 volts peak,
then you will appreciate that the 150 volt rail is more than enough...
but going to 250v is not a bad idea, tubes when run on higher plate voltages
will have more headroom and lower distortion if that is your goal...
caveat: subject to the tube's plate dissipation ratings of course....
notice that you will have to change the power traffo to higher secondary voltage,
and if you intend to go CLCRC all the more you need to start at higher voltage....

you will need to change cathode resistors at the first stage so that the first stage plate
sits at 1/2 B+...
you can use a vairable pot to set at 1/2 B+ and then measure the resistance
and then install the next standard value fixed resistor.....

btw, my latest preamp prototype used CLCRCRCRC.....

Will take note of this pointers Sir Tony. This is my next project, getting familiar with
tubes DIY first.

the penalty paid for that kind of psu configuration is that you have to start at a higher voltage... 8)
